I think it's just a "Cross-Bracketing" thing. District 6 is in Region 3 along with District 3. District 3 is the one that is switched.

 

Makes me think someone wanted to get all the teams he didn't want to play on 1 side for them a chance to get further in the playoffs. But it is what it is now!

I 100% agree.

 

My only thought was that someone close to the top of KHSAA and ties to a school that was getting beat regularly in the 2nd or probably 3rd/4th round wanted their team to get a chance to move around the nemesis team so they might get a chance to play for the State Championship, probably against that nemesis team. A bit like controlling 6A Jefferson County so they can't meet again in the state finals.

When the alignment started everyone had to think that 5A had became the Highlands vs. Bowling Green invitational tournament.

 

I am thinking they tossed everyone a bone and tried to set up a year where new blood was essentially guaranteed being able to get to WKU.

So it seems as if there is a better chance then not that during this 4 year alignment, Highlands won't make it to BG for the finals.

In 2017, Fern Creeks district (#4) switches out with South Oldham's district (#3). But Highlands/CovCath remains in Region 2 along side BG and Region 1 (aka they would meet for the semi-final again IF IF both were lucky enough to get there.

 

In 2018, Highland/CovCath flips back to their normal spot in Region 3 and wouldn't meet the Region 1/Region 2 winner until WKU.

 

Beyond 2018 is yet to be determined.
