Is Brazil going too far on Lochte?

It is not debateable that Ryan Lochte messed up in how he handled the "robbery" at the Olympics. However, Brazil continues to pursue criminal charges on Lochte and act like nothing wrong happened to Lochte and the other swimmers.

Regardless of the slant and exaggeration Lochte put in the way he told the story, the fact is Ryan Lochte had a gun pulled on him, pointed directly at him and he was forced to give money. Ryan Lochte was robbed.

Is there any country in the world where that is legal? Are you allowed to pull a gun and demand money from people in Brazil? I think not. Isn't that a crime?

I think Brazil is going too far and it is time for Lochte and the US to bite back. Brazil already extorted more than $10,000 dollars from swimmer James Feigen so he could get out of the country. I want Lochte and the US to tell Brazil to shove it and perhaps even demand the return of the money they extorted from Feigen.

Lochte will never step foot in Brazil again. They can clamor on and on about all the charges they want to file until the end of time.

At the end of the day, he was robbed at gunpoint. The US (as politely as possible) will eventually tell them to pound sand, and this will go away.

I agree with you, VoR. Don't we all have more important things to worry about?! If I were Lochte, I'd tell them to pound salt. Of course, he will never be able to travel to Brazil again but after his experience there, I doubt he will want to go back anyway.

Again, I believe his story. He may have embellished it a bit and left out his vandalism and public urination but the rest, I believe, is absolutely true. They got caught up in a shakedown.

Ha ha! Great minds!

The way I look at it, at the end of the day if you don't get so drunk that you vandalize stuff, urinate in public then have to add a story to the events, I'd guess you wouldn't have the "security guards" pull a gun on you. You brought it on yourself by acting like a privileged idiot. Lochte should absolutely know better, it's not his first Olympics rodeo. You are an American in a country with issues, you are a target.

Now if he had just been able to tell the truth(and hasn't he had other issues in his past?), this doesn't get turned on him especially with the "security guards" pulling a weapon and demanding immediate "payment" right then. The issue we'd be talking about today would be the way he was handled.

It's sad IMO that he doesn't.

An American citizen robbed at gunpoint in a foreign country and somehow he's the issue?

He's probably a tool and made a mistake but ultimately, shouldn't our government have his back a little. It's obvious that Brazil is corrupt and taking advantage of the situation.

I get what you are noting, but again his actions brought it on himself. The fact that he wasn't truthful in the beginning is coming back to bite him. It's as simple as that.

VoR seems correct.

Piling on and keeping this in the news is probably not going help their tourism industry.

If Brazil keeps pursuing this aggressively it is going to backfire on them.

I also agree with this as well, even though my posts state Lochte is responsible for this issue. What about the $10,000 Feigen paid? That's a huge issue to me.

Sorry, but his actions didn't warrant having a gun pointed at him, and cash demanded of him.

No it didn't, but he put himself in that spot with his idiot actions and he ABSOLUTELY knew better. He does not get a pass from me.
