Dan Straily - Reds Ace

Because when you're on your "rookie deal", each year is considered a one year thing. You're under team control until after your 6th season. So, for example, Jose Peraza is on a one year deal, but is under Reds team control until after the 2021 season. Same concept applies to Straily, except he's under team control until 2020.

But how is Straily under a "rookie" deal? He came up in 2012 and has over 300 innings in the bigs now.

I was looking at Cots and was confused. If they signed him to a 1 year contract how can he be under their control for 2017? I see that he is signed for 2016, arb 1 for 2018, arb 2 for 2019 and arb 3 for 2020 but what about 2017?

He's under contract with the Reds.

1. Descalfani

2. Bailey

3. Straily

4. Stephenson

5. Garrett

Would love to see bullpen: Cingrani, Finnegan, Idglesias, Lorenzon, Smith, Wood, Moscot (Tommy John),

?? marks would be Lamb, Sampson, and Reed, develop in Triple A at beginning of the year

Lorenzon and Iglesias have electric stuff and could be starters, however they worry me with wear and tear on their body's,

Because he only had 1 full year of service time as of the beginning of this year.

That means his rookie deal still carries 5 full service years, meaning he's not a free agent until after the 2020 season.

I really like Straily, but think he'll best be utilized with the Reds as a bullpen chip. You throw him on the back-end with the likes of Lorenzen, Iglesias, Cingrani, and IMO Finnegan and you've got the makings of a pretty solid bullpen going forward.

Why bullpen? Do you feel he'll never be a guy who could go 7 or 8 innings on a regular basis or do you not feel he has starter stuff?

So even though it was only a 1 year they still control him? Okay there are a lot of things around when your time starts, etc., etc. that are confusing but good for the Reds if that is the case.

I feel like they have better options for the rotation, and his stuff is best suited as the 6th or 7th inning guy on a team. If we just base it on "stuff" he's not close to top 5 in terms of contenders for the rotation.

Truth. Baseball contracts and service time intricacies are incredibly confusing.

If the commissioner is dead-set on fixing the game, he should make that stuff easier to understand. :lol2:

Bailey

DeSclafani

Reed

Stephenson

Garrett

Those are the 5 most talented starter arms that are either ML-ready or near ML ready IMO.

I really see Straily as starting in the top 5 next year, But Reed would give them a lefty. Hammer time why not Stephenson? He won when he was up here earlier

I did look at Stephenson for the Bats

6-9. 4.45 ERA, 16 HR's given up worry's me, he have over 100 strikeouts, I did read where the Bats manager said he doesn't listen to them like he should

Stephenson will probably be trade bait in the next year for a power bat. Not sure I buy in on Straily yet, I mean the guy was on the trash heap in March and now hes a #1???

He's not done well since going back down and butting heads with the DeShields down in AAA for not listening to his coaches. He continues to walk too many guys.
