Science Friction Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Any recommendations for some local or lesser known bands or artists? I saw this band a couple nights ago. Most of these folks are from the London-Somerset-Berea-Richmond area. Here they are putting a bluegrass spin on Journey's classic, "Don't Stop Believin' ." The young lady singing lead and playing bass is a counselor at Richmond Model.
Science Friction Posted August 14, 2016 Author Posted August 14, 2016 Saw Lisa Oliver-Gray and her band last night. Here's a cut from her CD. Leroy Parnell is playing slide guitar on this track. Lisa is originally from Elizabethtown. Real nice voice. She did some Pat Benatar, Rita Coolidge, Fleetwood Mac, Heart & more last night.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 From Cincinnati Jess Lamb was on American Idol and also took "Artist of the Year" at the 2016 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. Was unfamiliar with her until I caught her real nice performance on Fountain Square in Cincy a couple of weeks ago. Here's her CEA performance from earlier this year. She's currently touring out west, but is scheduled to be in Mason, Oh on August 19th for a performance at the Western & Southern Tennis Tournament. She also has an October, and a November date scheduled for the Southgate House in Newport, Ky She and her band have something going on and a real focus for bigger things to come. For fans of Florence and the Machine.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 A Silent Film is a British pop/rock band from Oxford, England that put on a real nice show on Fountain Square a few weeks back. Not yet nearly as well known as the likes of bands like Coldplay, but these guys have a wealth of catchy anthemic tunes, and a likable and exciting command of the stage that translates well to a fun experience for the audience.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Not yet a household name original drummer for the band Foxygen, from L.A. and transplanted to Bloomington, Indiana where he rounded up his talented backing band, showman and child actor Shaun Fleming AKA "Diane Coffee" recently put on two amazing Cincy shows, first in February and again in June. His sound is decidedly a catchy and exciting gender bending blend of Bowie-esque, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Mowtown vibes. In his live performances he gives you every ounce of energy that he can muster for an unforgettable experience.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 One man electronic extravaganza showman DJ from the state of Washington, Robert Delong put on an amazing show on Fountain Square a few weeks back. You would've literally had to have been dead not to have been moved by his non-stop colorful beat driven energy filled show.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Jesse Thomas is a Covington, Ky native and a Scott High School graduate who moved to L.A. in 2008 after graduating and immediately garnered attention as a promising singer/songwriter playing open mics. She released her critically acclaimed Ep in 2010, and two full lengths in 2012, and 2014. Recently caught her live at the Drinkery in the OTR area of downtown Cincy while on her national tour. B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Cold Springs, Ky native and Campbell County High School grad, Internationally known, smooth as silk singer/songwriter Daniel Martin Moore is presently promoting his 6th release "Golden Age" since his humble beginnings in 2008 produced by Louisville sensation Jim James of My Morning Jacket. He is scheduled to play the Zanzabar in Louisville on Sunday, Aug 21st. Caught him recently at the Kenton County Public Library in Covington, as well as an in-stoor at Shake-it Records in Northside, Cincinnati, and last fall at the BBQ Fest at Sawyer Point in Cincinnati. I try to catch his show just about every time he is playing in close proximity. Been a fan since his first release and think that we are incredibly lucky locally to have such an amazing talent that we can enjoy more often than those nationally who must wait for their once a year treat. Aside from his soothing voice and great songs, you won't find a nicer more pleasant guy around.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Coming from Baraboo, Wisconsin, Phox are 6 talented musician friends led by the sultry vocals of Monica Martin. Caught them at the Taft Ballroom in Cincy for a highly entertaining and fun memorable show of wonderful musicianship and lovely vocals. This Tiny Desk performance is a more low key example of the more rousing type show they bring to the live stage. [video=youtube;INcwU-Xk0M4]

I've seen Daniel Martin Moore a couple of times, and I'm figuring on checking him out at Z-Bar on Sunday so long as nothing else pops up. Fun fact...he just produced a forthcoming album with one of my best friends, Travis Talbert, an '03 grad from Covington Holy Cross. www.facebook.com - Mavis Guitar

They're southern rock-ish. FFN has recorded Paste Magazine: Daytrotter Sessions on two separate occasions now, and they have been featured in Massachusetts' Glide Magazine. jvdfc Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Meanstreak is a great local Band from the Frankfort/Lexington area. They perform all over KY and do mostly 80's Rock. There is a few bands by the same name I believe, but this group has a female lead singer. They have stuff on Youtube but I can't look it up right now. Check em out!

I wasn't aware that Daniel was doing some producing, or that FFN had an offshoot band in the works. I've seen FFN 3 or 4 times and dig that Covington has an alt-country band with high aspirations with the similar spirit and quality of bands like Son Volt or Whiskeytown. Hope you get the chance to go to DDM's show. Since you've seen him before I know that you know what I'm talking about when I say that his voice is smooth, and that he's a super nice gentle spirited guy.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Caught this Nashville based alt-country singer/songwriter at a musicfest in Bellevue, Ky along the Ohio River named Ruston Kelly who has a very similar sound as Ryan Adams. It was a pleasant surprise considering I had never heard of him before, and his entire show with the sun having just set, and the colors of the dusky sky creating a dramatic canvas behind him made for a real nice atmosphere to accompany his stellar and relaxing performance He'll be on the road starting in September supporting his first and recently released full length "Halloween".

Definitely enjoyed it. 2) Mavis Guitar released their first track on their Bandcamp page to preview and download, along with a pre-order of their digital album. Really pretty.
