Could this be a long year for North and South Laurel

Featured Replies

Will this be a rough year for the two schools from Laurel County???

South Laurel handled in week 1 by a less than mediocre team from a year ago.

North Laurel stomped by a good 3A team.

It seems to me that both needed better showings if they want to compete in 4A this season.

I dont think that i would ride either one of this teams off yet. South's problem was 4 turnovers in the first half which would be contributed by first game gitters and lack of timing and focus. That can be resolved throughout the season and i believe that it will be. North should be okay. They were just overwhelmed by the depth of JC's roster. JC has a deep team that can use 6 or 7 different solid backs and has a solid sub at almost every defensive position. North has some great players like Asher but needs to focus on giving him holes to run through and giving the QB time to drop back and pass.

I think it is a little too early for any team to throw in the towel right now. Lots of teams, especially young ones are going to stuggle in their first few games. I expect South to be right in the hunt for the district title.

You cannot gauge how good a team is based on your impression of them from a year ago. This is high school and a lot changes.

South Laurel got beat by a very athletic team and turned the ball over 4 times in the first half. They lost linemen, WR's, LB's, RB, etc as well as having a new coaching staff and defensive scheme. A lot of young guys playing big roles and they will just get better.

North Laurel got beat by a very good team and did not play very well past the first quarter. North could be hurting more this week as they have lost several players who have staff infections. They have a lot of new players, a new QB, a new offensive scheme, some new linemen who will all just get better with time and experience.

I agree with JC Alum 76, it is too early to write off any team after only 1 game. These coaches and kids don't need people telling them after 1 bad game that they 'can't compete in 4A'. They need to get to work and remember why they play the game, ... it is supposed to be fun!

BTW, both Holmes and JCHS received votes in the AP poll this past week. They are both a little underrated IMHO.

Although NL has some injuries right now there is no one on the team that has STAFF infection. You should really check your sources before posting something like that, staff infections can be a very serious situation.

Actually, it's staph infections. But you are correct in that no one on the team has this. There was a player who had one several weeks ago, but it was cleared up and the locker room disinfected.

I will have to admit that I'm a little concerned about how South Laurel will respond against the Titans saturday night. I know they throw the ball very well. And, by the negative posts I would say that they will be wanting to prove somthing. I know it will be interesting cause alot of the former Harrodsburg kids on the Mercer team haven't forgot about that 51-6 drubbing SL gave them last season that forced a running clock all second half. So I think both teams will have a little fire in their belly come saturday. I expect a great game. Keep your fingers crossed, this game might make it on live tv.

Too early to give up on either team. NL will be a better team in the upcoming weeks, as some younger players get some much needed experience, and JC was a very good team. SL has too much offensive firepower to lay down, and let their season get away from them. Look for both teams to rebound, and improve this week. I believe that NL has a much better chance of winning this week, though Western is NO slouch.

As for NL's health: Bad case of Old News being overblown. The problem has been taken care of, just as Jim Schue said. NL will be at full strength on Saturday.

I never suggested that they be "given up on", I merely think that it will be a dissappointing year for both squads. I hope not. but that is what I fear.

The only way the teams would give up is if the coaches give up on them.

That being said, North will probably struggle. South, who knows? They will win some games, but I don't feel they are as well coached as in years past.

Well i was reading in the Paintsville Herald today about the recap of JC and NL game friday night and the P-ville Herald choose to use the article of the paper in London. In the article i thought the coach from NL was a little to hard on his team and keep saying that these kids had no heart. You know i can understand tell your team that in private or in a team meeting but to me to run it in the ground in the newspaper is a little alarming. I dont know others may disagree with me on this but i think that it was alittle uncalled for. Good luck to both South Laurel and North Laurel this season and I am sure that these two teams will get it together in a couple of games.

Very well put, Holmes is a better team this year.

And you make this observation after one game?

I have been reading your comments about SL and East Jessamine for the past 4-5 months...they are always so negative about the coaches...I for one hope that both teams and their staffs prove you wrong!

These coaches will not give up on their kids, ever. I think that Abbott's comment about the team showing no heart in the game is a comment of frustration and designed to fire his kids up a little bit. I hope it works as they do have some talent. If every back would hit the holes the way Maggard does, their running game would be much better than it was the past few weeks. As for the QB slot, I would be awfully tempted to give the freshmen his chance and let him learn on the fly. He was the most athletic of the 3 who played and has more ability to make plays with those qualities. Plus, he is already the biggest and will just get bigger. NL hasn't had a QB of any size since Hammock. These 5'8" QB's have a difficult time seeing downfield without deeper drops and the frosh is around 6'0" right now plus has good footwork.

I think that SL lost a lot of talent from last year's team and have a new coaching staff. NL is trying to adapt to a new offense with new people (and often younger kids) in many key positions. They will both improve as they season progresses. I don't Chappel as well as Abbott, but know that Abbott will give every waking minute of his time to getting the Jaguars back on track. I actually thought that SL's O coordinator, Chris Hayes, had a good game plan, but the TO's in the first half killed them, then the kids started to get frustrated. Take away the TO's, and that game is a down to the wire, who has the ball last nailbiter IMHO.

Just going by the posts of their fans through the summer and their scrimmages. Just know some things that would lead me to post that way about SL and EJ. Hopefully, the teams will overcome.
