July 22, 201610 yr Been a long time since I was on the base. Surrounding area has some nice parts and not so nice parts. Beach is still fun there and you will get to see some amazing ships. If youre looking for beach and close distance prob the best spot, looking for non beach I'd look at Gatlinburg.

July 23, 201610 yr Hotels at Va. Beach are crappy or expensive. Try VRBO or Airbnb to find a dwelling for the week.
July 23, 201610 yr I love going on vacation in September. Kids are back in school, so it is less crowded and rates for places are " off season" cheaper. Only drawback is that it is hurricaine season. We got burned by that a couple of times.

July 24, 201610 yr Are you trying to act like base towns are somehow nice? Not at all just trying to show the pros and cons of the nearest beach to KY.
August 10, 201610 yr Author Looks like I'll be in Chicago attending the Cubs/Brewers game on September 15 and also touring the field and stuff that Tuesday. Should be a fun trip
