OHIO: Medical Marijuana Approved

Kasich legalizes medical marijuana in Ohio | WGRZ.com

Here's the big sticking point for many marijuana advocates: Under this law, it's still illegal to smoke marijuana — even if you buy it out of state. Vaporizers, edibles and oils are OK.

It goes without saying: Recreational use of marijuana also is still illegal under this law.

Seems like a sensible way to go about this.

Is there a limit to how much THC medical marijuana can contain? Does the medical usefulness of this get reduced if the THC level is cultivated out?

In this case all that is legal would be vaporizers, edibles and oils...smoking still out of bounds.

This is one subject I know NOTHING about, I did not know if strength could be regulated like with traditional drugs, say a 5 mg. Tablet. By limiting the THC?

Get with the program, grandma. :) No, seriously, I wouldn't know THC from TMZ . I have seen stories where some folks have been helped by the medical marijuana, so I think that's a good thing. Recreational use...not an advocate for it .

So one time, my friend, was having back spasms. My friend thought smoking some marijuana would help. However, my friend later came to question how well marijuana can mask pain, and his paranoia actually seemed to make his back pain worse.

Clearly there is more science than my friend's experiment, but he'd rather stick with conventional pain relief, and the marijuana use to recreation only.

I had watched a special on CNN about three brothers, in Colorado, who had been able to cultivate marijuana plants with low THC. I just thought that would be a safer method to produce medical marijuana. In the news program, they stated making it into an oil, it has higher levels of THC. So my question still is, can medical marijuana come in different strengths? Does the higher levels mean medically speaking, that it provides better pain or nausea relief? I'm sincerely interested as I try to decide if medical marijuana should be legalized.

There are two compounds in marijuana responsible for almost all of its effects. The one you probably already know about is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But the other, cannabidiol (CBD), is becoming more well-known in the medical marijuana community for both its potential medical benefits and because, on its own, it doesn’t produce the same psychoactive effects that THC does.

As David Casarett, MD, author of Stoned: A Doctor’s Case For Medical Marijuana told us last month, there are dozens of other cannabinoids in pot, but THC and CBD are the two we know the most about. For instance, we know that THC mainly activates CB1 receptors in brain areas that are associated with memory and coordinated movement. We also know that CB1 receptor activation can interact with the release of another well-known neurotransmitter: dopamine. This all causes a lot of those classic stoner effects — altered thinking patterns, euphoria, and a not-so-great memory, to name a few.

However, unlike THC, CBD interacts with CB2 receptors, which are found more often in various immune system tissues in your body than in the brain (although they are there in smaller amounts). But CBD interacts with and can block both CB1 and CB2 receptors, meaning that it may sometimes block THC’s actions. So, CBD on its own tends to produce effects more along the lines of anti-inflammation and reducing pain. And, crucially, CBD doesn’t cause the same “high” that THC does.

Thank you so much for all of these very informative posts. I was a pharmacy technician for 10 years and the consistent strength would make me hesitate if friends or family here in Kentucky, asked me if I knew anything about it. It will eventually come to a vote in Kentucky. And I need to become an informed voter on this because until now, I knew nothing about marijuana. Except for the negative found with recreational use.
