June 13, 201610 yr They left a lot of runs on base even in the Regional. Very out of character with the stupid base running. I believe I heard on the telecast that McDonnell coaches base-running, too. The worst was when the runner got hit by a batted ball between second and third. I never played much baseball. Can you get the big head in baseball? There was a lot of talk around town that UL was a cinch to get to Omaha. Maybe the players (many soon to be rich pros) felt the same way. Very disappointing.
June 13, 201610 yr Author Burdi couldn't throw a strike in the ninth. Walked the bases loaded. Then finally found the zone but hung one over the plate badly and the guy smashed it over the right field wall. Walk-off, series-clinching grand slam. Just to clarify, Burdi struck out UCSB's #4 hitter on 4 pitches. #5 grounded 1st pitch (a strike) into CF for a single #6 was 1-2 and then Burdi threw 3 balls #7 (PH) walked on 5 pitches #8 (PH) hit a 1-2 changeup over the fence. Burdi was clearly wild for the next 8 pitches to 6 & 7 after getting to 1-2. However, he had settled back in to get a 1-2 count on the Frosh PH before giving up the GS on a changeup in a spot you do not want to throw to any LH batter (low & inside 1/2 of the plate).

I'd much rather have it after the Super Regionals and before the CWS. You'd hope that all the hype wouldn't impact the players, but they are just 20 years old and some of them just found out they are going to make life-changing $ with a chance to make "generation-changing $." Not saying it made a difference (Harrington and Tiberi both played great, Smith and Solak played well and Funkhouser didn't pitch. Ray continued his poor play from the last 2 games of the Regionals.)
