FWIW my example was in Ohio. I just have mixed feelings , yes coaches should go to bat for their players for awards , but often it costs far more deserving players the recognition they should be getting.

KHSAA already has significant amount of responsibilities and as we've all seen KHSAA bashed as much as coaches. Do you really want awards placed in their control too?

 

I don't really care where or who has responsibility. And I am a proponent for the KHSAA. I think they do good work. I'm just saying that if it's a "KY all state" award, all players should be eligible. There shouldn't be "conditions" that dictate if a kid is eligible to receive an award they have earned.

 

There are a lot of smart people in this state and should be able to come up with a solution. If the money for awards is an issue, maybe the KHSAA can fund it and let all coach's vote without be a part of an association. They really don't have to be involved in the voting.

 

Let's say...1st and 2nd team get plaques. That's 20-24 kids @ $10 a plaque.

Sums it up, right there....I would add that it doesn't END in HS, as well....as far as coaches "selling" their players, it is natural in an awards environment, IMO....HS stats are wildly inconsistent and inaccurate due to inconsistent, inaccurate, ignorant, and even unethical scorekeepers, so that just can not be used as a basis for any type of legitimate award, so there has to be a subjective element involved, as well...the whole "good ol' boy" mentality will always be there for and against certain teams, players and coaches...when my DD played, it was no different (she played for Bloomer, for god's sake :lol2:)...The only remedy is to join in, and be an influence for your players....the NKY area has a pretty unique thing going, and it is great, but as an outside observer (with a few connections), it seems to me that the area has isolated itself from the State, as a whole, in these regards...with the exception of a few that I have seen on here...even this site was pretty well exclusive to the 9th & 10th when I joined a few years back...KY HS softball is territorial, like about everything else...I'd love to see the NKY territory, which is already VERY organized, join in with the WKY Mafia, the Ballard Over-Hype Machine, the Louisville Area City Slickers, the Ashland Hill People, etc., and start "selling" these players statewide.

Good point, but most coaches won't nominate kids that would threaten their kid's chances. So true, they are all eligible, but only association members can nominate and vote.

Without KSCA, no one would be all-anything. If you want your kids or your part of the state fairly represented and honored, join the KSCA.

Agreed...I'm saying they should be state awards or change the name from "all-state" to something else because it's really not "all state". The winners of these awards are not necessarily the best in the state (because all kids may not have been considered) and the kids that play in the all star games may or may not be the best in the state. (which is fine for the all star game, that happens at every level). But saying "all state" implies the state has their stamp of approval on it and really not all kids have the same chance to be part of that.

 

I'm saying remove the requirement to be a part of an association to nominate kids, because that alone can eliminate deserving kids from being nominated. And let all coaches vote. Then it's truly an "all state" award. Until all kids can be nominated without going thru being part of an association and all coaches are involved in voting, it's not really an "all state" award. It's an association's all star team for the kids that happen to be lucky enough to be nominated by that association.

I can tell you this, at the All A state tournament this year, a few coaches I talked to brought up the fact that NKY had a poor record as members of the KSCA and that it reflected in the lack of respect (per se) they give NKY softball.

BTW, Asst. Coaches can not join until Head Coaches join..........I found this out 2 years ago after they cashed my check and then denied me any nominating/voting privileges, and they still kept my money. :no:

In the pre-season player/team watch list, I think it was Region 9 that didn't have a single vote submitted. If you want to get your players some publicity, that would be a good start.

Exactly my point with your planet fitness example. It's fine to have the KSCA, but then call it the KSCA all star team. Not all state because it doesn't include all of the state.

 

If planet fitness was giving out "most fit" awards for their members, that would be fine. But if they were giving out "Most fit in KY" and only nominating their members and only their members can vote, is that really "most fit KY"???

 

Why does any coach have to join an association to get high school kids recognized???

 

For the record. I have been a member of the association the last two years. I missed the boat on getting my registration in on time. I tried to contact everyone to make up for the mistake and was told it was too late. I have 3-4 kids that are very deserving of all state consideration. One of which was all state last year. Now because I thought I was signed up and found out I wasn't, those kids won't even be considered. So this is where all this is coming from. So two points, that's not their fault I didn't follow up and confirm what I thought was done. And the kids that are competing for all state aren't even up against some of the best in the state with just the elimination of my kids. (And however many others that didn't get in on time).

 

No one has told me why it's necessary to have to join an association to get all state recognition. There has to be a better solution that includes all kids, regardless if you join an association or not. This should be a state award. Not just the kids that get signed up.

 

And lastly, you earn respect on the field. Not at a coach's convention.

And I don't recall getting asked that question. I saw the list when it came out. Don't have a clue who was asked about a watch list. We traveled the state getting our kids recognition.

Perhaps MLB should quit calling its championship the World Series since it only involves teams from North America!
