I enjoyed reading the liberal and conservative quotes threads. But, I believe the definitions have changed.

 

In the 18th & 19th century, conservative meant you supported the status quo, a monarchy government. Liberal meant you wanted change, to a more democratic government that protected the rights of the people (John Locke).

 

In the 20th & 21st century, conservative means you are for small/limited government. Liberal means that you want a larger/active government. Conservatives think government is the problem. Liberals want to use government to solve problems. Conservatives believe they are the heir to Locke's legacy. Liberals believe they are.

 

Agree or disagree? Please explain.

The classic definition of a Liberal are those called libertarians today.

Minton Freidman who was very conservative by today's standards routinely referred to himself as a classical liberal which is quite libertarian by today's standards.
