weight classes

Featured Replies

Adding 10 pounds to the heavyweight class isnt the answer. High school students are bigger now than when the weight classes that we have were made. Keep 14 classes, just make the lightest class 110 lbs. And spread the classes out, from 125 to 152... there are way to many weight classes. From 171 to hwt, there are way too many big gaps.

Anybody else have any thoughts or comments about this issue?

I agree with you. There are like 5 lb gaps in the lower classes. then you go up and there are 171, 189, 215. The gaps are too big. Especially in between 189 and 215.

Several teams are having to forfeit the 103 weight class because nobody can make the weight. Any team in the state will have a hard time filling their 14 weight classes if the weights are not realigned within in the next year or two. Not only that, but there will be a big decrease in intrest among high school students because they cant participate.

From 171 up , I think they need to add one and lower one . How about 171 , 185 , 195 and 215 .

Something needs to be done. Wrestling is going to become just like boxing, a dying sport. The smaller schools "which there are very few in kentucky wrestling" will drop there programs. One thing that may help is to class wrestling like football, just have 3 classes instead of 4. But the weight classes still need to be realigned in the worst way.

I agree that the weight classes should be more spread out and the upper weight classes increased, but I don't like the thought of getting rid of 103 pound weight class. This is the only HS sport that allows the smaller athletes to complete, don't take this away from them. Coaches are allowed to use middle school kids, if they can't find one at the high school. Not that many teams in the 7th region forfieted 103.

Great point Mr. Pancacke! Alot of the other regions, especially smaller schools who don't have very big programs usually end up forefitting the smaller weights because smaller guys are so hard to get commited and involved in a sport because of there size. So i agree, don't take it away from them!

The problem with spreading the middle weights out is that is where most of the kids are. Most schools can fill the 130 - 152 weights, but may have trouble filling heavier or lighter weights.

Ok, keep the 103 but add another class. Make 15 classes or maybe even 16 classes. Teams like Woodford Co. LaRue Co. South Oldham, Wayne Co., Sheldon Clark... would love to see the weight classes realigned to let more wrestlers participate. One problem that I know happens alot is having 4 or 5 good wrestlers that can go up or down 1 class that have to wrestle jv, because they are behind 3 or 4 year wrestlers at each of the classes they can wrestle at. I love wrestling, it is my favorite sport, I just want what is best for the sport.

My suggestion would be 160, 170, 185, 200, 215, HWT OR

160, 175, 190, 205, 220(225) HWT

and drop 103

160 171 189 215 245 285

I'm not sure if you'd have enough big boys to fill both a 245 and a 285 weight class. A lot of tournaments we went to, the HWT was wrestled round robin because there weren't enough wrestlers. Also, it seems there is a trend for the good HWTs to be lighter, say 210-235.

I agree with you on the HWT's being lighter. BUT, there are more kids wrestling that are heavier. The 10 pound addition was great, lets hope for all classes to be moved around next season.

I'd like to see 160, 171, 180, 191, 215, 275.

just my opinion though.
