April 20, 201610 yr #12 Kentucky led #3 Louisville 5-1 after 7 and a half. Wild pitches became the rule from the bottom of the 7th on for the Wildcats. They give up 5 runs in the next 2 innings, while garnering 1 for themselves, and find themselves tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the 9th. Logan Salow opens the bottom of the 9th by striking out Corey Ray. He then walks Colin Lyman and gives up a single to Brendan McKay. Zach Strecker comes in to relieve Salow and on the first pitch, gives up a walk-off single to Devin Hairston. The Cats are now 23-13, 9-6 in the SEC. They host Arkansas this weekend. The Cards are now 30-7, 13-5 in the ACC. They play at Boston College this weekend.
April 20, 201610 yr Cards have won the last 5 between the two, I believe, but how important is a mid-week game?
April 20, 201610 yr Cards have won the last 5 between the two, I believe, but how important is a mid-week game? Very little.... but it's nice to beat Kentucky no matter when it happens.
April 21, 201610 yr Author Cards have won the last 5 between the two, I believe, but how important is a mid-week game? Depends. If Kentucky was more borderline in the RPI department, winning this game would be important. As it stands, though, UK losing to NKU did more to harm them, than losing this one.
April 21, 201610 yr Cards have won the last 5 between the two, I believe, but how important is a mid-week game? You'd rather win a mid-week game than lose one, but the pitching makes mid-week games different. Neither team is using their top three pitchers so many things can happen. A loss to Louisville doesn't really hurt, but Kentucky has a tendency to lose mid-week games to mediocre opponents.

A loss to Louisville doesn't really hurt, but Kentucky has a tendency to lose mid-week games to mediocre opponents. And in the past 2 weeks, they have lost mid-week games to a quality opponent. Cards played poorly early (UK's 1st 2 runs were aboard via leadoff walk and error) but never gave up. They scratched and clawed to come back for a walkoff at JPat for the 2nd time in a row v. UK. College baseball regular season is divided between close mid-week opponents and weekend conference games. UK being ranked helps UofL's already ridiculously strong strength of schedule. The regular season is also about securing (in order): 1 - postseason invitation (suspect both clubs have this well in hand given a field of 64 teams) 2 - a top 16 seed (secures home field advantage in the 4 team regional double elimination to start the Road to Omaha) (based on current progress through the season & past performance in the CWS, UofL has a good chance and UK would currently be on the bubble and needs to play their way into that spot) 3 - a top 8 seed (secures home field advantage for regional and Super Regional (best 2 of 3) (if UofL continues to play well they would have a chance at this; winning the Atlantic Division of the ACC or the ACC Tourney would help in this regard tremendously)
