Strength & Conditioning Browns-style

Featured Replies

There has been much written about the new "analytics" approach the Browns are taking to evaluating personnel since hiring "Money Ball" Paul DePodesta. Today there is an article on ESPNCleveland.com concerning the new approach to strength and conditioning the Browns are taking--Bruce Arians also is doing some innovative things with technology for the Cardinals.

The Browns have seven strength coaches. One for each position group. The man they have overseeing it all, Adam Beard, is from Australia and most recently was the head of physical performance for the Welsh Rugby League. He says that each position has unique needs for strength and conditioning and their strength program should be tailored for them, hence the need for so many strength coaches. The goal is not only to get stronger but to prevent the occurrence of soft tissue injuries. Beard was hired in 2015 and spent the season observing the team and learning American football so that he could design a program to meet the needs of every position on the team. He has a Master's degree in sports science (biomechanics) and is working towards his doctorate (I assume PhD).

This is just one more function of the Brown's reliance on analytics to achieve success. It's another indication that owner Jimmy Haslem is very serious about turning things around in Cleveland.

So what do you think? Is this a good direction to go with regard to improving sports performance and reducing injury?

Does anyone have experience with the difference good strength and conditioning training can have on performance?

Still the Browns....

...*mic drop*

Sounds interesting until you you are reminded THEY HAVE NO QUARTERBACK!!!!

Interesting approach. I wonder how the other teams would respond if you put that model to them and asked them about it.

You can't "mic drop" yourself. :lol2:

Interested to see how he structures the programs for the different positions. It makes sense but who knows how well it will work. Time will tell.
