With all of the talk on this site the last few days, I got to thinking what acts or alleged acts committed by a coach of a high school sport, boys or girls, should result in a reprimand, suspension and/or dismissal? Could there be any differentiation made depending on if the coach is involved with boys versus girls or vice versa? Curious to hear what some have to say on this topic given the wide array of responses we have seen posted.

3 resignations within the last 30 days from a coach involved in a situation regarding their behavior - South Laurel Girls Basketball, Scott Boys Basketball, Conner Softball. Any others recently. Also 3 different kinds of alleged situations.

I believe that a policy should be written that's very clear, stating the offense and repercussions, up to and including termination. I also think that any issue with a coach should be addressed first between the player and the coach and then escalate to the AD, principal, BOE, etc with a cool off period. The exception would be sexual harassment from the coach/player.

I would say the biggest idea to keep in mind is The Guru's biggest hammer point - TRANSPARENCY!!! Let's hold the system accountable and find ways to fix problems, not just demonize coaches. Yes, there are situations in which coaches should be let go. But let's open up the full picture so things can be addressed and prevented.

That policy book would be about 10,000 pages long. I wouldn't think there would be a policy that states "don't put a ball in the pitching machine and hit your player with it".

Student Athletes and parents cannot be held accountable for anything.

Coaches are held accountable for everything.

Administrations cave to parents and athletes without so much as token investigation.

 

There is too much focus on Coach's behaviour and not on how administrations deal with parental pressure and accusation. Quite frankly, they react impulsively and cave like sniveling cowards! In addition to VOR's interview questions, I believe that administrators have to be challenged by coaching prospects to describe how they have handled parental complaints, and whether the chain of command was followed.
