UHA shutting down softball team

Featured Replies

I think more and more each sport is trying to take a little more time from the other sport, which is causing kids to have to choose 1 sport over the other. It's very rare you see the softball, volleyball, basketball athlete any more, sad but true. I have seen coaches at the high school level pressure kids into choosing 1 sport over the other, when they don't even conflict.

I haven't spoken with anyone from UHA. I do know Coach Odaniel personally and haven't heard that they weren't fielding a team. I know they lost some players last year. They will still be the top small school out of the 2nd region.

Question...What is the new KHSAA regulation about Middle Schoolers playing up? My daughter is in 8th. Can she play H.S. ball this year?

Yes. 7th and 8th graders are eligible to play up. I think the regulations that came out a couple of years ago restrict kids under 7th grade from playing up.

Last year was the 1st year 6th graders were NOT allowed to play on ANY high school team (Frosh, JV, or Varsity).

I know of a few schools who placed 5th graders on their varsity rosters for the 2014 season so they would be grandfathered in for 2015.

I know at Mason County we do not have a good feeder program for girls softball (and baseball). Kids have to leave the county to play little league. That hurts because the girls aren't sticking with it past T-ball. My daughter played in Fleming County LL and loved it. But it does take effort to get your kid to practices and games and I don't think enough parents are willing to do that.

Surprising. You would think that Mason County would be large enough to support even a minimal sized league for both.
