Officials discredit their own trainer and disqualify #1 kid in the state in Wrestling

Featured Replies

How in the world do you as an official discredit your On-Site trainer to disqualify the #1 kid in the state for ringworm when the kid had a KHSAA skin release form signed by a doctor releasing him to wrestle? There was an official that had ties with another team that had a kid that would have seen my son in the finals. Fishy??? Dirty??? The doctor's release form says that ringworm is not contagious after 48 to 72 hours. My son has been on treatment for 5 days. I think when an official or a coach has any power to overrule a Medical Professional that becomes child endangerment. The KHSAA form clearly states that the only person that can overrule the signed medical document is an on-site Medical Professional.

Any Thoughts or comments?

Was this at the State Qualification event?

Ring worm is pretty much just a nuisance and it is quite clear when the rash is drying and being treated.

Per Seattle's Childrens Hospital:

Contagiousness:

Your child doesn't have to miss any child care or school for ringworm.

Ringworm of the skin is mildly contagious. It requires direct skin-to-skin contact.

After 48 hours of treatment, ringworm is not contagious at all

He wrestled last week at District's and won that. He was #1 seed at Regional and that's when the officials disqualified him for ringworm that we had all the appropriate documentation for. He was ranked #1 in the State, this is a horrible situation.

If it were my son and I truly believe he got screwed I would be yelling from the rooftops and one of those rooftops would be in Lexington.

I would be on Tackett's doorstep if it were me. If the KHSAA wants to take over middle school athletics, they need to accept responsibility when something like this is overlooked by local officials.

I acted like somewhat of an idiot at the event, but didn't do anything over the edge. There was 3 nurses and 1 nurse practitioner that all looked at it also and they said let him wrestle, he's good. His coaches talked to all the other coaches which shouldn't have to be done, but they said let him wrestle, He's the #1 kid in the State for crying out loud. It's treated ringworm that wasn't contagious??? All of his coaches, Athletic Director, and High School Coach is fighting this as well. He is a total mess and told me he doesn't want to wrestle in High School because of this. This can really screw a kid up!

I have already talked to Tackett, he said they have no jurisdiction over Middle School Wrestling in this area.

The bad thing is that I'm having to spend money out of my own pocket to protect my son that we had totally covered with the KHSAA skin release form.

I asked one of the guys that was running the tournament why I payed a co-pay to my insurance to have my doctor sign for him to be released. He said the KHSAA form is just a safety-net for the officials?????????? What in the world does that mean? When you have a Dr's signature on a Medical form, that is more than a safety-net

I have sat my son down and explained there are a lot of politics in sports and every day life. He sat there and listened for about an hour, but I see it can't fix what is done to him. Wrestling is a different animal and you work like you have never worked before, it's personal. He has been wrestling since 1st grade, and I hate to see a kid that pours his heart and soul in a sport get a bad taste in his mouth. The biggest thing I am proud of over this, is he said his teammates are not the same without their Captain and he will be at the State Tournament supporting them. That takes a lot of guts and character. :thumb::ylsuper:

My fault. Thought he was a high school kid. Doesn't make it any better this year for him but at least he's still got years ahead of him. I'd still pursue it just for others and to get a determination as to who has final say.

I have found some things out since my son got railroaded from going to State by the Officials. I have found out when an Official overrules a Medical Document & an On-Site Medical Trainer, that they are practicing Medicine. I have found out, that is Medical Malpractice. Anyone agree or disagree?

Have you contacted an attorney?

I doubt that I am going to say anything that is going to ease this pain, anger, frustration....however....

As it relates to malpractice, no, I do not believe it is, but as a parent I certainly respect that fact that you are willing to go to the mat (pun intended) for your kid when you believe they have been wronged by an institution or person. I don't see a case here though....

As it relates to your son, I hear lots of great things you are saying about his resolve, and that is, in and of itself, wrestling....if he had blown out a knee, it's an easier conversation, but still disappointing.

He is in the cradle of wrestling and has opportunities to be coached and trained by one of the all-time greats in the State of Kentucky if not the US....I would encourage you to have this conversation with Coach B and let him talk to your son. 30+ years he had similar conversations with me, so I'm pretty sure about what you will get for your effort.

Continue to encourage, give him some time, and above all, try very, very hard to not let your distaste for the organizational issues spill over to your son...that's the greatest danger here. Kids are resiliant, the fact he knows his team needs him is all I would need to hear. I'm willing to bet he will be fine.

For you as a parent: chin up. You are more resiliant than this as well. You have the support of people who understand kids sports.

Have you contacted an attorney?

Yes I have, and from what my Attorney is saying, if an official doesn't have a medical release or an On-Site Medical Professional then they can Err in the safety of the kids and make the call. But, when they decide to overrule a Medical Release and an On-Site Medical Professional, they are deciding to practice medicine. When you say you are good and you aren't, you are practicing medicine when you decide to overrule Medical Professionals. It is going to be a long road, but hopefully I can stop this from happening to any other kid. There is no reason for an Official to overrule 2 Medical Professionals. Their butt is already covered, it is just Dirty Business and hopefully I can wash some of the dirt out of Wrestling. It is a great sport!
