B-Ball-fan Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I wonder if any of the rankings this week will give any love to Holy Cross in the 9th considering they have already beaten the 3 other 9th Region teams in the top 20, and most recently CovCath? :idunno:
First Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Are we really supposed to believe that these are based on performance to date? Ballard is coming on as of late and I believe they have some players back from injury. But this ranking doesn't take that into account, right? So, the #5 team in the state is 13-6, has lost to a couple of teams that aren't close to being ranked, and has lost to a couple of marginally top 20 teams by 14 & 22? SMH.
westernky Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I don't like these rankings but I believe Ballard is a top 10 team. Since December 21st they're 10-2 with wins over Bowling Green, Owen County, 2 out of state teams, Waggoner twice, Oldham County, fern Creek, St. Xavier, and Trinity. 5 of those teams are top 20 in my opinion. Ballard now is a different team then they were before Christmas.

That may be true, and maybe they should be in an AP type poll - but not in a poll that's is supposed to be based on ALL results season to date. Hard to understand it.
Griffster Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 If you don't understand Ballards talent- you don't play their schedule.
SoccerMath Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 The system does have a little bit of a "what have you done for me lately" kind of effect to it. Two teams with identical 8-8 records over the exact same opponents, by the exact same scores, one team wins their first 8 and loses their next 8, the second team loses it's first 8 and wins it's next 8. The second team will be ranked higher. It may account for Ballard's high placement.
SoccerMath Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 My Christian County response from last week: Christian County has a similar story, with the 58th rated strength of schedule. Below is their resume. Again, they look like an excellent team. They have moved up from #78 since the beginning of the year, and I wouldn’t be surprised a bit to see them continue to climb. The fact of the matter is that they haven’t played a team yet above #35. They beat Tilghman by 5 at home. We currently have Christian listed as a 6 point favorite over Tilghman on a neutral court. They beat #42 Owensboro by 8 on the road. We currently have Christian listed as 8 points better than Owensboro on a neutral court. Rank Opponent Location WinningMargin 203 Caldwell County a 40 73 Madisonville north hopkins a 41 52 Warren Central n 28 42 Owensboro a 8 56 Daviess County n 19 110 Apollo n 21 178 Mclean County n 44 109 Webster County h 32 35 Paducah Tilghman h 5 120 University Heights a 14 #18 is a pretty good spot for them so far.
SoccerMath Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 Holy Cross Cov. gets some love at #24. The entire top 200 is available on the maherrankings site. I'm guessing you were only looking at the top 20?
lamontab Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 How can Holy Cross Cov be ranked behind Cooper NCC & CovCath when they have beat them all head to head?
First Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 If you don't understand Ballards talent- you don't play their schedule. I don't know about their talent, I was just looking at some of their results vs teams whose talent I am familiar with. They lost to Bryan Station; loss to Doss by 22; lost to Clay; lost to North Hardin; and lost to Male by 14. Bryan Station is a bad loss. None of the others Teams are bad teams, but the margins vs Doss and Male don't look too good. And none of those losses were to top 10 teams, yet we are saying they are top 5. Point being that those losses, in totality, don't make me think top 10, much less top 5. That said, if key players were out due to injury, they may literally be the 5th best team in the state now. I'm just saying it's hard to justify that in a poll that looks at cumulative results and doesn't factor in injuries or missing players.
#99 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 How can Holy Cross Cov be ranked behind Cooper NCC & CovCath when they have beat them all head to head? I was wondering the same thing.
lamontab Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 That's not love that's disrespect. Holy Cross can't be ranked behind 3 teams in the 9th region that they have defeated head 2 head. This poll is bias flawed.
