Lawnboy13 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 NewCath....08-15-12-11-6---52 Holy Cross 11-08-09-18-4---50 NewCath Davenport 21 (19 after halftime) Breen 12 (10 1st half) Schalk 9 Zimmerman 4 Rice 3 Martin 3 Holy Cross McClendon 21 (16 after halftime) Beal 10 Tucker 10 Gabbard 5 Chames 3 Crigler 3 NewCath FT's : 15/27 Holy Cross FT's : 12/18 The packed house at Beechwood saw a dandy tonight. Holy Cross raced out early to a 11-4 advantage, however they could not hold on, as the Breds take a 20-17 lead right before the half on a Lexy Breen "triple" from the corner. Breen would also set the halftime margin at 4 (23-19), as she "tickles the twine" from 23 feet seconds before the buzzer. The Cross would pull within 1, at 27-26 with 4 and a half remaining in the 3rd, courtesy of some careless ball handling/passes by the Breds.....however the Breds would increase the margin to 7 entering the final stanza. NewCath would take it's largest lead of the game (39-28) on the 1st two plays of the 4th on a "beautiful" backdoor cut and basket by Davenport, then Davenport on a run-out and "floater" in the lane. The Cross would then score 7 of the next 8 points to cut the lead to 5 (40-35) with 4:16 remaining, starting with a Tucker triple that takes a healthy bounce off the front iron, but enters the "promised land". From this point on it is nip 'n tuck, but the Breds maintain the lead. A couple of untimely turnovers give the Indians one final chance, and they take bigtime advantage. With NewCath clinging to a 46-43 lead and :06.1 on the clock, McClendon launches one from 27 feet and it's Nothing But Net!!! On the ensuing inbounds play Davenport goes coast to coast and lets go of a floater in the lane that just does rim out and it's on to FREE BASKETBALL (Overtime, for the uninitiated:lol2:). Davenport opens the extra frame with an unbelievable drive and scope shot, Holy Cross could not hit a shot from the outside and get 2 McClendon drives for buckets for their only OT points. My comment in the update thread about the Officials possibly not making it out of the gym alive......by the 2nd quarter both cheering sections were very boisterously voicing their displeasure and near the end of regulation I feared for their safety. :lol2: Everybody got their $5 worth watching this one, including the Highlands coaches who enjoyed their company tonight.
Lawnboy13 Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 I didn't stick around for the All Tourney Team, but I'd wager that NewCath's Ansley Davenport was the MVP.
Lawnboy13 Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 NewCath heads to Frankfort for the 9th time in 10 years, and 12th time in the last 16......chew on that @RCC9.
allsport71 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Congrats to the Breds. Coach Stoll can flat out coach. Good luck down state. Just like Holy Cross, bring another title back to Northern Ky.
RCC9 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I agree with the Stoll comment. Very dedicated and passionate. But I think has also gets some help from other coaches in the region. But I really like what he does with his team. No matter where the game plan comes from, he knows how to get his players to execute it and that's what is important. Great job coach Stoll!
Muskie24 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 It was a really fun game to watch. Congrats and Good Luck to NewCath
Lawnboy13 Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 From the Enquirer......... NewCath girls edge Holy Cross for All 'A' championship Ansley Davenport scored 19 of her 21 points after halftime to lead Newport Central Catholic to a 52-50 overtime win over Holy Cross Saturday night at Beechwood in the Ninth Region All “A” Classic championship game. The Thoroughbreds (12-5) will play in the first round of the All “A” Classic state tourney 8 p.m. Jan. 27 in Frankfort against the Region 2 champion. That regional tourney doesn’t start until Monday. Holy Cross, the defending All “A” state champions and overall KHSAA state champions, fell to 11-7. “It’s awesome to finally have the championship back at NewCath,” Davenport said. “I’m really proud of my teammates and coaches. I felt like I really needed to step up for my teammates, get this win for them.” Davenport’s baskets lifted the Thoroughbreds to an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter. She had a basket and two free throws to start the extra session. The Indians never got closer than three points after that. Sophomore Lexy Breen sparked a second-quarter uprising for the Thoroughbreds. She had eight points during a 13-3 run to close the period, including a pair of 3-pointers. Breen led all players with 10 points in the half. Holy Cross led 16-10 with five minutes to go in the half and had a layup opportunity to build an eight-point lead. It missed. NewCath sprinted on the fastbreak and xxx Olivia Schalk broke free for a layup. Breen scored a bucket to make it 16-14, then scored on a 3-pointer in transition to give the Thoroughbreds the lead at 17-16. The Indians led by as many as seven in the first half at 11-4. Dajah McClendon had five points in the opening run and Zyah Beal four. NCC came back with jumpers from freshman Kara Zimmerman and Davenport to trail by three, 11-8 after one period. Freshman guard Olivia Crigler pushed the lead back to six with a 3-pointer to spark the Indians to a 14-8 advantage early in the second period. After halftime, NCC led 27-22 before Beal scored four straight points to cut the lead to one at 27-26, the last coming on a transition basket. Davenport then went to work, scoring eight straight points bridging the third and fourth quarters to give NewCath its largest lead at 11, 39-28. HC came right back with a 9-1 run, five of those coming from Aleah Tucker and four from McClendon, and it was 40-37. “(Davenport) did have a slow first half,” Stoll said. “Games like this, if you want to win games against good teams, your best players have to step up, and she did. She made a lot of tough shots. I’m so proud of her. She deserved it.” The teams traded points and it was 42-39. McClendon missed a three and Davenport scored in transition to push the lead back to five at 44-39. McClendon made two free throws with 1:35 left to make it 44-41. NCC turned it over but HC missed a jumper, then NCC turned it over again. Tucker drew a foul in transition with 1:01 to go and made both freebies , and NCC led 44-43. Davenport made two free throws with 57 seconds to go. Tucker missed a three. Crigler’s putback attempt missed, but NCC turned it over on the other end and the Indians got the ball back with 30 seconds to go, down three. McClendon hit a 3-pointer from the wing to tie it, and NCC called time out with six seconds to go. They gave the ball to Davenport, who drove into the lane and put up a floater, but it rimmed out at the buzzer, and OT ensued. “That was fun,” Stoll said. “After McClendon hit that three, we were a little down. I told them I love basketball. This is fun . This is why you play games like this. I wouldn’t want to be with anyone else right now. They got fired up then and came out on top.”
CAP Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I agree with the Stoll comment. Very dedicated and passionate. But I think has also gets some help from other coaches in the region. But I really like what he does with his team. No matter where the game plan comes from, he knows how to get his players to execute it and that's what is important. Great job coach Stoll! All coaches talk to each and give their opinions on how to play teams and players from other teams but for you to say "no matter where the game plan comes from" is ridiculous, on one hand you compliment him then say stuff like that. Stoll can flat out coach and he out coached Kez last night. I do like your post but in some of them you back door things you say.
Notaref Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 George is the man. I couldn't make the game last night but my bet is he gave his kids a good plan and the kids made the plays. Congrats to the staff and the players. Maybe HC will have some time to put some stats in since they have sime time off now.

Stoll can flat out coach and he out coached Kez last night. I do like your post but in some of them you back door things you say. A lot of these things are inside jokes that I'm doing for the benefit of certain viewers. I think Stoll does a great job and part of what he does is builds a relationship with other coaches! Having a network of people you can go to is part of the"being a good coach"! Any coach would be silly not to ask how other coaches play certain teams. It wasn't supposed to be a knock on him. I've said many times that I think he does a great job and has "overachieved" with his teams the last two years. That's what I look for in a coach.
coach gray Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Congratulations to Coach George Stoll his assistant coaches and the Breds players. I saw Coach Stoll after the game and he was so proud of his team. Tough, hard earned victory. George is good people and one of the hardest working coaches I have ever met. Congratulations to the Lady Breds and good luck in Frankfort!
9thregionknowledge Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 @Notaref. Lay off HC. Their Coaches use their time doing other things than posting stats. Posting stats won't win games. Making sure you have the pipelines open is more important than posting stats.
