New Tackling Style Used By The Seahawks

Featured Replies

Just to be clear, I never said lead with your head, but have your head in front of the ball carrier.

Oh, I understand.

Looks like they were perfectly average among the NFL teams in the number of missed tackles per snap in 2014. (Source)

Only one of the top 12 teams actually made the playoffs in 2014. I would have thought this statistic would have had at least somewhat of a correlation.

This could show some correlation of how many players a team has 'swarming to the ball'.

You were probably taught head in front also.

This teaches players to tackle with the head behind the ball carrier, which is the opposite from almost everyone was taught.

I never put my head in front unless I got yelled at. It didn't seem natural, and, truly, seemed stupid.

This is not new.....

Maybe new to everyone else but the Seahawks have using this Rugby style of tackling for a few years. We implemented this technique rather the Heads up style that we are supposed to be teaching with our 7th & 8th grade team in Ft Thomas and the results were almost an overnight success. It teaches the kids to lead with more of their shoulder and use their very own body weight to tackle the player and roll away to the ground. If it is effective at the youth level can you imagine what the NFL could benefit from it....
