FB realignment: Why are North and South Laurel in different districts?

Featured Replies

I think all of this is purely is speculation anyway, I mean once teams decide to play up those N and S may be able to be in the same district. If Rockcastle, Bell County, etc decide to move up then these are hte districts that they would be placed in.

Surely anyone could note North Laurel's proximity to Clay County compared to South.

What about South's proximity to North?

Something strange is going on to keep those schools split. There's no logical reason it should happen.

There's no comparison with Kenton, which is basically part of Cincinnati and has five different school districts in one county.

I have wondered the same things concerning the basketball realignment. Clay was not wise in staying in the 13th. I think they would have liked the 14th much more. Only time will tell. If Laurel builds a third high school in the future how will that shift things around?

North and South Laurel are approximately 5-7 miles apart.

If a 3rd high school is built (as is on the drawing board right now), it would drop them from approximately 1,200 students (600 males) per school to 800 students (400 males) per school. This doesn't count for student increases, but if we guess-timate approximately 3% growth in student population, that equals 2,472 total students (1,236 male combined), this puts them at 824 students (412 male) for each of the 3 schools. They would no longer be 5A schools if my math is correct. This could change everything if they schools are divided equally as they were in the 1992 SL/NL split.

You have never displayed or written in a paranoid ("they are out to get us or there must be some conspiracy") manner in all your years. It doesn't become you. Use the same 10 schools in those districts and come up with a better plan (and quit using Harlan Central, at this point, they don't apply)

Having the Laurels split doesn't really affect Harlan County, but I truly wonder, in this one case, if something isn't going on. It bothers my sense of decorum (is that the right word?) that North and South aren't in the same district in EVERYTHING.

You make a good point though about not criticizing if you can't do better. I think/hope Harlan County will be there in a couple of years to make my earlier scenario work.

If not, I'd go with:

District 7

Mercer Co., Lincoln Co., Pulaski Co., Southwestern and Whitley

District 8

Clay Co., Letcher Co. Cent., North Laurel, South Laurel, Perry Central

London would be the dividing line with the schools to the east in District 8 and the schools in the west in District 7. South just has to go up U.S. 25 to North and then head east on the parkway to get to all their district games. Whitley would probably be closer to the District 7 schools than they are to Perry Central or Letcher Central.

In basketball, this would work better:

District 49 - Clay, OBI, Jackson, North and South

District 50 - Corbin, Whitley, Williamsburg and Lynn Camp

The basketball breakdown would seem more logical, but from what I was told, Pineville had some pull to get the ditricts the way they turned out.
