Updated Maher Rankings 1/3

Covcath is too high. Newcath should not even be in the Top 30. Cooper is probably spot on. Holy Cross should be in the Top 15. Owen County is a Top 20 team. Looking through the Top 50 this is a useless poll. I will never look at it again.

Owen County is a top 20 team.

They defeated #5 Henry Clay earlier in the season. They also defeated South Laurel who is 9 spots ahead of them. They only lost to Trinity by 7. No way should they be at #38.

They also lost to Ballard.

Christian County is a top five team, at worst top ten team in the state.

Do these rankings account for out-of-state opponents? Six of Christian's game have been out of state. If you look at who they've beat within Kentucky, its a duke's mixture of teams with no real marque in-state win.

No, we don't consider out of state teams, since you have to know the strength of each opponent to rate the result, and we don't know the strength of all the out of state opponents, unless we go to MaxPreps!

They also lost to Ballard.

Yes and Ballard is ranked 7th. Both of their losses are to top 10 teams...still doesn't justify being ranked below 20.

Check out Ballard's losses.

I'm just responding to your original post that said Owen had only lost once.

Also, looking at their wins, I count 2.5 good wins: South Laurel, Henry Clay, and Taylor County. If the formula for ranking uses strength of schedule, I can see where Owen might come up short (although I think they should be ranked in the top 20). Bottom line, with formula rankings you can't expect to get a really great read on rankings until the entire schedule is complete.

Throttled a 10-4 Daviess County team by 19

Hammered a 9-4 Madisonville team by 41

Beat a 9-4 Warren Central by 28

I'd consider them top 5-10 in the state based just on their in-state resume. Beating previously unbeaten Champagne Central (Ill.) in 3 OTs bolsters their resume.

The formula does use strength of schedule. Check out the graph on the page below.

The vertical lines represent the end of each season. The system peaks at about 82-84% prediction rate each season for boys basketball. However, it gets there at about the mid-point of each season, not the end. It kind of levels off at that point. So, we don't really need the whole season, we have a pretty good read (as good as we are going to get) about halfway through. We aren't quite there yet this season, so you can see we are still in the mid to high 70's in terms of prediction rate, but you will see it climb in the next week or two.

Some of the complaints you read above may work themselves out in that time if they are justified. If not, they won't!

Looks like CovCath lost, but out of state, so we can't factor it in. My guess is that McNick is pretty darn good though. Owen and Mercer both won so they will be moving up. Christian County also wins.

Perhaps we should run a mid-week spin of the rankings!
