If Hammonds leaves Bracken Co., who might take over?

Featured Replies

It will be very interesting to see what transpires at Bracken Co. w/this whole Hammonds situation. He hasn't really had any kind of success at Bracken other than a HUGE upset over Bishop Brossart a couple of years ago in the district.

I am almost certain the administration at Bracken Co. will hire an outsider for the coaching position. I also think they will be very selective w/who they hire even though it is late in the summer and school about to start.

This could be the opportunity for Bracken County to get the breath of fresh air they have needed since Gary McKinney came back to coach the Polar Bears.

I heard the reason we jumped on Simms so quick was that the rumor he was going to Bracken.

I have heard that Brad Riley would be considered for the job.

I wonder if CC would let him go this late?

Would love to see my long time friend Brad Riley get the job. He still lives in the county so that would eliminate the 35 minute trip to school everyday, and being an alumni, he already will have the fans on his side. Dont get me wrong, I like Hammonds, but he hasnt produced as we all expected. I dont think 1 win makes a career. If Riley did come, those St Pat./Bracken games turn into a little more of a rivalry, with former softball teammates facing each other on the sidelines.

Coach Riley would bring a lot of hard work an emotion to the job. What kind of staff would he have in place or would he be able to bring people in? Does he already live in Bracken County?

Brad's lived in Bracken county all his life, and owns a home there now. Worked with him in the past, and he definately will bring some fire too the sidelines. As for staff, the guys who are coaching JV have been theyre a while and the freshman coach has a few years under his belt, and coincedentally, lives just down the road from Riley, so who knows??

Just a question why not try to lure Jason Hinson to BC? I'm sure he would like to have the oppertunity.

Just spoke with Riley... he has not been contacted yet. As for Hinson, i think he is pretty happy at St. Pat. With it being this late in the year, it may have to come from in-house for at least 1 season.

Nothing against Brad Riley, but I think that the administration is looking at a different approach than that! Being this late they will be hand-cuffed some, but there are plenty of assistants looking to move up to be the head dog. I just don't think Riley would be the answer!

What direction do you believe they are heading? What assistants would you suggest? Why would any other assistant be the answer over Coach Riley?

I have heard some rumblings about 2 other assistants in the region that's all and neither were Brad Riley. I just don't think from what I have heard he is what they are looking for and I don't think being an alumnus of BCHS will help him at all. He has primarily been involved in girls basketball and there is a difference between the two. It would be hard to turn your boys program over to a coach in his first head coaching stint who comes straight from the girls background. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE girls basketball and coached at the HS level, but there is a difference!

The thing to remember here is, the Head Coaching position is not a certified position. That means technically it can be offered or given to whomever the administration wants w/out having to post the position or hire a teacher or fill a teaching position w/a coach. If a teacher on staff would want the position then they would have the inside track on it, but the administration could still hire who they wanted regardless of the teaching aspect.

I see a double standard here. It doesn't seem like schools are having any problem handing the girl's programs over to assistants from the boys side. I agree there is a difference and I don't see handing a girl's program over to an assistant that comes straight from the boy's side..

I am under the belief that most school sytems work under the assumption that if a teacher is interested in a coaching position that they are to be considered before any non-teacher can be expected. I believe a job must be posted unless you are hiring from within your system.

There is a double-standard to be sure and schools don't have a problem handing those girl's programs over to boys assistants or coaches who have never coached, i.e, Bracken's head girls coach Molly Schultz had never coached at any level prior to her stint at the helm of the Lady Bears. That is not to knock what she did as a player in HS or college or what she did last year as a coach, but that is rare to be handed a head coaching position w/no coaching experience at all.

Most school systems do operate under the assumption that if a teacher is interested they are considered, the key word is CONSIDERED. A certified position has to be posted for a certain number of days and that is mandated by the state, non-certified positiond do not have to be posted. Thus, this is how Chad Simms was hired so quickly at Pendleton County and that helps for a very smooth transition at PCHS.
