December 8, 201510 yr Tobacco sales to people under 21 banned in Cleveland | fox8.com CLEVELAND -- Cleveland City Council approved a sweeping change Monday night. They voted in favor of raising the minimum age to 21 of those who can buy tobacco products and e-cigarettes in Cleveland. It passed 13 to 3. The legislation bans stores from selling cigarettes, tobacco and e-cigarettes to those under 21 in the City of Cleveland. The first offense would be a fourth-degree misdemeanor, which could result in 30 days in jail or a $250 fine. Additional offenses would be second-degree misdemeanors and that could potentially mean 90 days in jail. They can take another look and make some changes before the law goes into effect. That would be 120 days after Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson signs it into law. Council is delaying a vote on a proposal that would prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products everywhere but in retail tobacco shops. They passed a resolution to begin hiring only non-smoker city employees by 2017.
December 8, 201510 yr This is incredible. The punishments look pretty stiff too. I remember some of my friends began using as early as 8th grade. I wonder if this age change will make a difference.
December 8, 201510 yr Author I just can't justify how someone can say "You have to sign up to potentially be drafted at 18 and forced to kill or be killed by your country, but you can't buy any cigarettes until 3 years later."
December 8, 201510 yr I just can't justify how someone can say "You have to sign up to potentially be drafted at 18 and forced to kill or be killed by your country, but you can't buy any cigarettes until 3 years later." I say the same with alcohol. But if one has to be 21 for alcohol, I have no issues with doing the same with tobacco, even if alcohol was 18, I'd still be behind tobacco being 21.
December 9, 201510 yr I just can't justify how someone can say "You have to sign up to potentially be drafted at 18 and forced by your country to kill or be killed, but you can't buy any cigarettes until 3 years later." Had to fix that for you. It just wasn't reading right the other way.

December 9, 201510 yr The city of Cleveland is a mess and this is what they are voting on. Banning adults from buying a legal product.
December 9, 201510 yr So unless I've read it wrong there is nothing in this law that says 18 year olds can't use tobacco ? So they can go to the surrounding suburbs like Parma and Lakewood and purchase the products and go home? Who will police these stores? No fed agencies because this is a local ordinance. Are they going to have police setup stings to bust adults buying tobacco? This is just dumb.
