Week 1 of the 2015/16season has came and gone and let's take a look back at all the actionacross the 14^th regions.

 

 

 

 

 

1. Perry County Central (1-1):
   

Sure their's other teams in the 14^th region that areundefeated and/or have more wins than Perry Central but theCommodores got a big win over arch rival Hazard 62-48 and then wenttoe-to-toe with #2 Taylor County in the Legacy Nissan Classic atNorth Laurel. Perry Central fell to the Cardinals 70-68.

 

2. Leslie County (2-0):

The Eagles check in at #2 this week, picking up 2 wins with one ofthose wins coming against 4x 14^th region champ, KnottCounty Central 63-56. Things don't look any easier for the Eagles asBuckhorn and Hazard lye ahead of them this coming week.

 

3. Cordia (1-1):

A blowout win over Sheldon Clark (78-31) and a thrilling but lossgame to Fern Creek in the Legacy Classic at North Laurel have theCordia Lions checking in at #3 this week. Cordia continues to provehow dominate they are even without big man Oumar Keita who is injuredfor the time being.

 

4. June Buchanan (2-0):

Coach Justice has his Crusaders off to a good start this season. TheCrusaders picked up 2 wins this past week defeating Jenkins 77-41 andOwsley County 64-45. This week's games should be a good test for theCrusaders as they will battle both Knott Central and Lawrence County,both on the road.

 

 

5. Breathitt County (2-0):

 

 

Wins over Riverside Christian and Newport have the Bobcats in at 6.The Bobcats got things started with a 94-26 win over visitingRiverside Christian. Breathitt would then turn their attention toNewport, who would make the trip all the way down from NKY, It wouldbe a close game but in the end the Bobcats would prevail 70-57.Breathitt County will face yet another district opponent this week inJackson City.

 

6. Hazard (1-1):

Senior transfer Austin Spurlock scored 17 points in Hazard's 66-41victory over visiting Jackson City to start the season. Hazard wouldface crosstown rival, Perry Central on their own home floor and theend wouldn't be what the doctor ordered as Hazard would fall to theCommodores 62-48.

 

7. Knott County Central (1-1):

Knott Central got off to a good start with a 79-73 overtime win overMagoffin County but would fall in their first region game in a yearand half. Their last region loss came to Hazard 48-46 back in2013/14.

 

8. Buckhorn (1-1):

Senior Connor Hoskins has already racked up 48 points this season injust 2 games for the Wildcats. 22 against Owsley County and 26against Walton-Verona. Connor keeps this up and Buckhorn could behosting a regional title trophy at seasons end.

 

9. Letcher County Central (1-1):

66-63 loss to Harlan County and a 106-86 win over Jackson City putthe Cougars in at #9 this week. Junior forward Torell Carter pouredin 25 of Letcher Central's 63 points in their loss to Harlan County.

 

 

10. Wolfe County(3-0):

The Wolves are off to a fantastic start. They enter this week at 3-0with wins over Allen Central, Menifee County and Estill County. Somefireworks took place at the end of the Estill County game as juniorDavid Spencer would hit the game winning 3 pointer at the buzzerright in front of Wolfe County bench to send the Wolves home with thewin, however, the rematch with the Engineers takes place Friday nightin Campton.

 

11. Powell County (1-1):

Despite allegations against the Pirate basketball team, the Piratesopened the season on the road @ Corbin but they didn't get the resultthey wanted as they got thumped 64-21 to begin the season but thePirates would bounce back to defeat South Floyd 65-55 on Saturday inStanton. Things don't get any easier for Coach Whitaker or thePirates as they host state powerhouse, Scott County on Tuesday night.

 

12. Estill County (0-3):

The Engineers are 0-3 but should be 2-1. Engineers had leads overSomerset (11+) going into the final frame and a 9 point lead on WolfeCounty but couldn't hold either one of them. Engineers will look toget revenge on the Wolves Friday night in Campton.

 

13. Lee County (1-1):

The Bobcats played Jackson County close but would fall 70-59 to theGenerals but would bounce back and defeat Red Bird 65-55.

 

14. Jackson City (0-3):

The Tigers are 0-3 to begin the 2015/16 season and week 2 doesn't getany easier as they face Breathitt County and Allen Central.

 

15. Owsley County (0-3):

#2 of 3 0-3 teams. The Owls have had it hard this seasonlosing by 13+in all 3 of their games to start the season.

 

16. Jenkins (0-3):

The Cavaliers were pounded by June Buchanan (77-41), Shelby Valley(74-27) and Harlan (85-39) to begin the season. Things won't get anyeasier this week as Letcher Central comes to town for a big districtshowdown.

 

17. Riverside Christian (0-2):

The Rams are still looking to get win #1 this season and for quitesome time.

Perry Central must be better than what I thought they'd be with the loss of 5 year starting guard Braxton Beverly to transfer. Beating Hazard soundly on the road and following that up with a 2 point loss in London to state power Taylor County is a good start to the season. And the narrow loss to Taylor County was without the Commodores' best player in the lineup.

 

Also, you stated that Knott Central was a 4X (consecutive) regional champ. Actually, I believe they've won the 14th region 5 straight years. They won it the year before Cam Justice played as a freshman. They had the good guard who transferred from JBS, and later played at Transylvania. I can't remember his name, maybe Cox. Also had a big muscular player who was about 6'2 who was their top scorer.

 

The 14th region this year is, as usual, a 53rd and 54th district battle for a trip to Rupp. The 55th and 56th don't have any teams, to my knowledge, that can put up a challenge.

They might be # 1. Their loss to Fern Creek was without their big kid in the lineup. I haven't heard why he's out but I'd guess it's an injury.

I might say 2 right now but I believe they are the best team in the region when Keita returns.

They are not playing ineligible players. If the KHSAA cleared them to play, they are eligible.

I'd have Cordia 1, but I think clearly they and Perry Central are the 1 and 2 in either order.
