To a certain extent I agree. However, we also get fed what they feel will build ratings. We have much more interest in certain parts of Europe than the rest of the world. France, and Paris in particular, has always held a certain fascination in the US.

I think -- to a certain extent -- this hits the nail on the head.

 

The simple truth is that the news media thinks a certain way. When I was taking journalism classes in college, the best workable definition of "What is news?" I ever received was: News is a deviation from the expected.

At a certain point, most folks just say: "Well, another outbreak of violence in Africa."

 

It's terribly depressing to try and comprehend that reality.

You're exactly correct. People see Kenya...Ivory Coast...Somalia...etc. and say...sad, but same old same old...crazy corrupt governments/rebels/religious factions trying to kill each other for the uptenth time. It's all very sad...but unfortunately it's all very true, and we have become conditioned to just expect that sort of thing there.

As long as Islamic terrorists don't go into the wild game preserves and start blowing up lions and elephants, it won't get much news in the West.

 

Sadly, I think the afore-mentioned map has a lot of truth to it. Additionally, there was another point that acts of violence tend to be rather commonplace in many third-world nations. Also, at times, it would appear that the value of human life in some regions is lower than we or maybe the French would hold it. :idunno:

 

It is a valid observation.

 

Maybe better birth control in these regions is the answer. :whistling:
