A Canadian federal judge who berated a teenage rape victim for not keeping her legs closed during an alleged attack is under review for his heartless remarks.

Federal Court Justice Robin Camp faces removal from the bench after he asked a 19-year-old woman, "Why couldn't you just keep your knees together?" during her assailant's trial, CBC News reported.

The young victim said she was sexually assaulted over a bathroom sink during a house party in 2014. The judge, who was serving the Alberta provincial court at the time, slammed her for not doing more to prevent the violence.

"Why didn't you just sink your bottom down into the basin so he couldn't penetrate you?" the judge asked during cross-examination.

The Canadian Judicial Council announced it is reviewing Camp's conduct after four law professors filed complaints on Monday against his "sexist and disrespectful treatment" of the victim.

The four female complainants say the judge also indicated the victim never properly explained to him "why she allowed the sex to happen if she didn't want it."

"If you were frightened, you could have screamed," Camp allegedly said during the trial. "She certainly had the ability, perhaps learnt from her experience on the streets, to tell (him) to f--- off."

Camp acquitted the alleged rapist of sexual assault, but that ruling was later overturned by the Alberta Court of Appeal last month.

The judge was remorseful and apologized for causing "deep and significant pain" to the victim, according to his statement issued through the Federal Court.

"To the extent that what I have said discourages any person from reporting abuse, or from testifying about it, I am truly sorry," he said. "I will do all in my power to learn from this and to never repeat these mistakes."

Camp is co-operating with the review and will not be assigned any new cases related to sexual conduct, the court said.

The judge, who was appointed to the Federal Court in June, is also undergoing gender sensitivity counseling.

The professors say his comments "undermine public confidence."

"This was not a case of mere judicial error," they wrote in the complaint.
