I always pay at the pump but go in fairly regularly for a Mountain Dew, Gatorade, gum, beef jerky, etc.

You need to have cash in a lot of places. Most people I know carry little or no cash. I don't know how many times we have gone to one of these cash places and someone has said "I don't have any cash, can you lend me some". Naturally, I always have cash on me. I believe it is the responsible thing to do. I believe one should have a combination of cash and credit/debit card with them to cover all occasions. Also, I rarely have been paid back for these "loans". I have let the people I know that the well has run dry.

Lots of small businesses will give you major discounts for cash purchases that they don't advertise.

I took Ms Slick's daughter to a boot store and after she found what she wanted I simply ask the store owner what kind of price they were if cash was paid and he knocked off over 30%. When a friend of mine mother in law passed away with no insurance and after original meeting with funeral director he was about to die. I told him to call the guy back and ask him cash price and he knocked off 2 grand. Sometimes it pays to pay in cash.

I normally carry some cash (roughly $50) but use my credit card for everything.

 

I'm surprised by the number of people that use a debit card, rather than a credit card, in this thread. I don't always carry a debit card, and I never use it, unless I'm getting money out of an ATM.

 

I've never understood the debit card either. Say you have $200 in your account. Keep it there, use a credit card. Pay it in full in 45 days gaining interest (well used to be able to say that) but at least gaining credit card points. It takes discipline but it is a great way of saving. I have some shinny new kitchen appliances that my credit card points helped pay for.

Bought a car at Dan Cummins in Paris a few years back with cash. I don't know how much it helped with the price reduction I got, but it was a significant discount.
