Standout Junior G Mason Blair (6'0'') will take an official visit to Indiana Wesleyan this Saturday. Mason led JC in Total Points last season (553) with the following averages:

 

16.8 PPG

3.0 RPG

2.03 SPG

0.27 BPG

1.79 APG

PER 16.6

 

Mason has some interest right now from NAIA to low DI and this will be his first official visit. Starting as a Sophomore he set the school record for points in half last season (30) and made 3FG in a quarter (8) both against Clark County. He was also one of the state leaders in made 3FG's (102).

 

Just an idea of how hot the kid can get at any time. He is also very good at creating his own shot, but will move into more of a leadership role this season as he gets others involved. He can run the point or SG position and is a very well built athlete for his class.

I thought the same thing, but they are paying for the travel, taking him out to dinner, and taking him to front row table as they play their rival that evening. You tell me what it is then because the player and their family foot the bill on unofficial visits (or at least thats what I thought).

 

I believe the school is NAIA Division II. I dont know how that effects visits, if any at all.

In each of those cases, the players committed after taking advantage of a new NCAA rule allowing recruits to take official visits beginning Jan. 1 of their junior year. Previously, juniors could take unofficial visits but had to wait till their senior year to take official visits, with the difference being that official visits allow the school to pay travel expenses for the prospect and a parent/guardian. The rule change was actually adopted in October 2011 but did not go into effect until Aug. 1, 2012, meaning this is the first chance for juniors to take advantage of the new rule.

 

That clip is from and ESPN article and there are provisions (under certain circumstance where a Junior after September 1st can take official visits as well). These rules only pertain to the NCAA and there is no mention of visits that I can find in the NAIA rule book.

Just so its out there, here is the 2015-2016 NCAA D1 Basketball recruiting guidelines.

You will see that official visits can begin Jan 1 of Junior year and if you read the provisions, this is can be waived to Sep 1 of Junior year under rare circumstances. Again, nothing said about NAIA recruiting.

 

Having said this I will stand by my original comment for Mason Blair. He will taking an official visit this Saturday and I wish him the best of luck and hope he enjoys the trip.

Good post. I read this as well and the only thing I found that even talked about visiting a campus was:

 

Students are permitted a maximum of two days of tryouts throughout their entire career, and the tryout cannot interfere with school time. The tryout must occur on campus. If a school has a policy for reimbursing all students for such visits, the same can be applied to you as a prospective student-athlete.

 

The term "official visit" was never used, hence my original comment as it seems travel, lodging, and meal compensation is on a school by school basis and not strictly outlined. This would likely explain what is going on with young Mr. Blair and Indiana Wesleyan.

Then why did you originally say juniors cannot take official visits? Did you not know of the college of topic was NAIA? Just curious.

 

It is not completely unlimited to D2 schools either. This there is a limit to how many times you can be reimbursed but there is more leniency than D1 I agree.
