Via NBC News, California governor Jerry Brown signed into law on Sunday a provision banning schools from using the term “Redskins” as a team name or logo. The law, which becomes effective on January 1, 2017, affects four California schools.

Is this a good or a bad thing? Should all states do the same thing?

Change the names. Within 10 years most will not remember or care about the old name.

 

I always thought Seneca (Redskins) were dumb for using the cartoon "Indian" (name escapes me) because it was drawn to fit the stereotypical mold and not very intimidating. The Red Hawks do have some kids beating a bass drum in the stands. Given the product on the field I could not help but see them as the bleacher bums in Major League lol

I graduated from Miami in the 80's and will always consider them the Redskins. They have received zero dollars in alumni pledges from me since they went over the top, PC in Oxford.

I'm offended that they still use Trojans. That's an attack on good condoms.

All the dumb ideas/laws start in California.

I ask this: How is marijuana against Federal Law, but some states have passed laws to allow it?

This a good thing. The professional team in Washington should change their name soon but they probably won't considering their idiot owner.

Again we are far afield from my usual domain

 

With that said, I "think " the underlying premise is that the constitution is a floor.

 

What I mean by that is that states can give additional rights but they cannot take away the basic rights afforded by the U.S. Constitution.

 

Someone much more intelligent than me can interject to the contrary.

Almost bought a Redskin T-shirt while in DCA Friday.

 

It seems more of a decisive political movement than a real issue. When the names Indian's (technically very incorrect) and Savages (explanation needed?) are added to the cause it will have more reasonableness.

 

BTW, the Seneca tribe approved of the Redskins name before it was adopted. Also the mascot is Lonesome Polecat. Or, alumni call him just - "Lonesome". It is still part of the logo and imagery of the school.
