If we look at the season as quarters of a football game then we just completed the first quarter. Typically in the first quarter coaches use a few series to feel out the other team and to see how they adjust to things. So the feeling out over and what adjustments will be made by these teams for the second quarter? What questions do the top teams have at this point of the season?

 

Trinity is sitting at 3-0 at the end of the first quarter with three dominating performances. Quarterback Jacob Woosley has settled in and leading the team completing just over 55% of his passes. The offense is averaging 48 points per game. I think the most impressive part of this Trinity team has to be their defense. Giving up only 9.0 points a game. Is there any adjustment Trinity will need to make for the second quarter of the season?

 

Can we crown the Rocks and save everyone the trouble?

 

Male has started off the season at 3-0 and averaging 50 points per game. With Quarterback Hayden Shelton leading a talented team of offensive weapons. Hayden has completed at least one pass to 13 different wide receivers. Male is getting it done on the defensive side with only giving 4.6 points per game. The one adjustment that Male is looking forward to second quarter of the season has to be the return of Keion Wakefield. Wakefield has been out with ankle injury.

 

Can Male beat Trinity when it counts the most?

 

What is exciting about this Friday night the Bluegrass Preps 6A Top two teams will face off at 7:30pm at Male stadium. Last season Male won the regular season game. While Trinity came back and won when it mattered the most in the playoffs.

 

Scott County has picked up a pair of wins over 5A powers that puts them at 3-0 on the season. Heading into their toughest contest on the year as the travel this week to take on Cincinnati Elder (OH). As usual Scott County is getting done on the ground behind a pair of running backs Keith Guy and Noah Hughes. Guy is also leading the team in scoring. Concern for Scott County going forward is on the defensive side of the ball. They are giving up 21 points a game over 3 games. But if you look at the last two games they have given up an average of 29.5 points last two weeks. Defense looks like it may need to adjust going into the second quarter of the season.

 

Is Scott County the team that will represent the East?

 

Manual has managed to stay below the radar so far this early part of the season as they are undefeated so far at 3-0. The big question is what do we really know about Manual so far? They struggled a little first two weeks of the season before picking up a blowout win in week 3. They giving up 9.3 points per game defensively. What is missing from this manual team early is a dominate win. This week the will take on a Ballard team that during the preseason had a lot of chatter behind them, but the last two weeks has faded.

 

Will Manual schedule prepare them for a playoff run?

 

Saint Xavier finds itself sitting at 2-0 on the season after the first quarter. Entering the season they had many questions surrounding this ST. Xavier team. Most importantly who was going to lead this team, but we found out quickly that quarterback Desmond Ridder was the leader of this team. The Tigers picked up an impressive win over a dangerous Bowling Green team.

 

Is this St. Xavier team good enough to be in the talk for the top spot?

 

Simon Kenton has kicked off the season with three wins. They have been doing with a high scoring offense that is averaging 53 points per game. What has been most impressive is the rushing attack that is averaging 391 yard per game. Dillion Powell is the teams leading rushing with 641 yards on the season. In week two they knocked off a talented Bryan Station team after a huge 4th quarter. The Simon Kenton Defense gained their first shut out of the season this week against Connor. Question for Simon Kenton as the season progresses will the ground game be enough to carry them through? Do they have a passing attack to help Mr. Powell?

 

Can anyone in NKY 6A knock off Simon Kenton?

 

Ryle starting the season off strong with a 3-0 record. They have a pair of impressive wins over a pair of traditional powers Covington and Lexington Catholic in back to back weeks. Ryle is being led by quarterback Morgan Tanner who has completed at least 1 pass to nine different targets. The defense has given up 26 points per game the first two weeks of the season, before they held a struggling Boone County to 7 points this past week. The question for Ryle defensively can they stop the talented teams in their district?

 

Is Ryle ready to claim the top spot in NKY 6A?

 

Pleasure Ridge Park has found itself sitting undefeated after three weeks on the season. Are they a sleeper in Jefferson County? They have a quality win over Meade County in week two. What do we really know about PRP this early? They are entering the second quarter of the season which features 3 top 10 opponents. (Male, Trinity, St. Xavier) Can PRP survive the second quarter of the season?

 

Is Pleasure Ridge Park ready to compete in 6A?

Didn't all of Highlands points come against the JV? Tates Creek a really good offensive team only scored on Scott Co.'s JV or that would have been a shutout too. I don't think Scott Co.'s PPG allowed is indicative of their defense.

SK has a passing game also. Racke threw 2 tds Saturday.

Trinity's special teams need to put their noses to the grindstone. They allowed two kickoff returns against Lafayette and that simply can't be allowed to happen against Male if the Rocks want to win.

 

Anyway, great summary. I'm really looking forward to these games.

Remember that the only thing that matters is the Win. Yes Scott County is giving up 21 points per game but they have given up 31 total points by the varsity. They are also scoring through the air and ground. The young QB outran everyone on Highlands defense the other night. He has also thrown for 5 TD's. Guy and Hughes pound you and when they get to the edge the SC running backs are hard to catch. Their defense is fast and fly to the ball. I doubt they have any issues to clean up there.

 

No matter what Trinity and Male are at the top right now and Ryle and SK in the North. Both are talented and can give a lot of people a run for their money. Powell for SK and England for Ryle are extremely good RB. Morgan is probably the best QB in his class in the state of KY. They have also proved they can win the tight ball games early.

 

In the west it is Central Hardin to me. In CKY beside Scott Co., Henry Clay has talent and so does Bryan Station. Their speed can be a problem for a lot of people but still even with the beat down Lafayette took, they are still extremely good. Huge OL and Woods is as crafty as they come. Show down in 2 weeks with Scott Co. should be a great one. 6A is very talented and on any given day any of these teams can win or be beat. Season is going to be fun to watch.

I remember the HC game in 2006 where I think HC got 3 TDs off special teams

I remember that game but could not remember which Lex team that was. That team had a handful of players who had amazing speed and took advantage of it in the open field during return.

 

Male may have even better speed as scary as that sounds.

We had trouble with the kickoff coverage last year with Male, almost cost us the playoff game as they ran it all the way back to our 15 or 20 after we just went up 10 & they scored a TD about 2 plays later!! I hope we get this fixed asap!!
