I've read in different threads and posts that certain programs are "down". The latest seem to indicate that NCC and St. Henry are down. I've think in other posts I've read that Cooper is down, and although I didn't look for it, I think I read in a post that Ryle is down.

 

BTW - nobody has said NDA is down. However, some seem quite certain that NDA won't be as strong next year after this current crop of seniors have graduated.

 

To tell the truth I don't know if the aforementioned programs are down. I don't think the talent in NKY has dried-up, but I could easily be wrong. If anything, I think there are probably more girls playing volleyball in NKY than ever before.

 

Are these programs really down or is something else going on?

 

I'm putting this out there to see what everyone else thinks.

NDA current team has 8 seniors who have played together in Club since they were 11. That is an anomaly which will not happen again anytime soon. With the advent of Tri-State vs NKYVC, 8 girls staying with the same club for 7 years may never happen again.

My opinion is Tri-State and NKYVC need to merge! What a powerhouse that would be for Cincy!!

LOL, that's a nice statement, but those clubs have totally different styles and geographic draws for the most part.

8 seniors that have "played together in club" is a little misleading. For the most part, they haven't been on the same rosters. Hentz and Colvin were on older teams some years. The remaining seniors were mixed between the Tsunami and Tide teams at NKYVC.

Not only that but what would NKYVC gain from joining up with TSE? NKYVCis doing just fine on their own for the past 20 or so years. And NDA has been built on the back of NKYVC during that same time.

Clarification

Actually NKYVC has only been around 15 years, and Tri-State only 2, but they are an offshoot of TEAM Z which was around for a long while before that.

 

There is sooooooo much interest in volleyball by athletes now that the sport is exploding, and there are tons of opportunities for kids today to play at a high level that didn't exist 10, 15, or 20 years ago.

 

It will be interesting to see what the kids who traditionally went to NKYVC will do with NDA's head coach coaching club at Tri-State's 14's. I would bet all the kids planning on going there for HS migrate. This will (and already has) made NKYVC's lower teams weaker. NKYVC will be forced to look across the river and to the other NKY schools for talent would be my guess. We will see over the next few years for certain.

 

People like to think that NKYVC's success has been because of some superiority in the design of their training program, and their are certain individuals which one could point too to make that case, such as Morgan Hentz, Ashleigh Bush, and so on... but there are just as many more who learned their skills elsewhere and migrated to their club before signing their letters of intent.

 

Again, some will argue that it is because they migrated that they were afforded the opportunity. The truth is that in this day and age if your team plays a national schedule they can suck, and as long as you can play, you will still get the same opportunities regardless of club affiliation. Lauren O'Conner could have played for Bluegrass select (which is now defunct by the way and the reason I used them), and she would have still gotten a scholarship with UK. Athletic Outside Hitters with a 6'5 frame are hard to come by.

Having watched a lot games this year I won't say teams are down as much as I would say other teams have elevated there games. Several Schools like Beechwood, Scott, Cooper among others seem to be stealing back some of the "swagger" that the NDA's, St Henry's and Ryle's have had the for several years. IMHO the tide is not changing, but it is leveling out somewhat and for the record that is a very good thing.

Speaking of "down" programs, Cooper lost 3-1 to Conner. 25-11 first set. There is way too much talent on that team to not be winning games. Someone please explain what went wrong for Cooper.

Why is this all about what went wrong at Cooper? How about what Conner did to win the match. Solid passing & Atwood having a spectacular game using all of her hitters. Smith was still bringing the heat & Rupple looks good.

NDA is clearly, and by a large margin, the #1 team in NKY this year. Scott is emerging as the #2 team. After that you have a bunch of teams that can beat each other on a nightly basis depending on who comes to play. In that group I would say you would have teams like St. Henry, Ryle, Beechwood, NCC, Copper, Conner, and Boone County (in no particular order). I don't think Scott would be immune to losing a match to one of those teams, but so far they have looked pretty strong.

 

I don't know if the picture changes next year or not. NDA will be graduating a lot of senior volleyball players this year. Whether they will be as strong as they are this year remains to be seen. Personally, I can't believe they will, especially because Morgan Hentz will not be in the equation next year. I think a lot of the other teams mentioned get better and things become even more competitive. But that is next year, clearly this year NDA is #1 .

A straight set win in the opener without Morgan Hentz suggests NDA would be a strong favorite.

 

Who is in the field at Oak Hills? Historically it's not a very strong field.

No it won't be a good measuring stick in Ohio. Teams like Campbell County, Oak Hills, and Cincinnati Christian? Scott doesn't have a good team left on it's regular season schedule. Hopefully will get a good match-up at the PLD tourney depending on who's going.

#1 : I hate the phrase "Lady Eagles"

#2 : that's not a good measuring stick. That's a cupcake of a tournament.

 

If Scott wants to be respected as a program, they need to schedule teams that are respected and beat teams that are respected. Their only good win to date is Ryle and if those teams played again, I don't see Scott winning.

 

If Scott beats any team down at Dunbar besides Creek, Boone or Cooper, I will be shocked. Sorry, but I just don't think they are that great of a team. If they beat a team like Henry Clay, Dunbar or Ryle again, I will stop doubting them.
