Why Do Teams Ever Punt?

This is where I get off the train... The net yardage reflects the fact that a returner catches and returns the ball. If the returner is not there to at least fair catch, that thing can roll forever. Field position is valuable.

I checked with him. Says average change in field position after opponents punt is 38 yards.

Pulaski is playing Highland Park in TX tonight.

2nd drive of the game they had a 4th and 4 from their own 21. Got the first down.

Ended up scoring a TD on this drive. Had another 4th down conversion.

Highland Park hasn't lost a game at home in about 10 or 12 years.

Same coach was on Sirius-XM, he is starting to put rugby principles into his passing game to create more 20+ yard plays. He found that 81% of winning teams at the college level had had more 20+ yard plays than their opponents that game. Explosive plays equated to wins more than turnover margin. He figured using the receiver as an option qb would create more missed assignments and more explosiveness. Pretty interesting. I played a flag football team in Mexico that would do a quick hitch into w/ 3 guys running underneath to pitch, pitch, and take off. It was pretty cool. I don't know how you practice that in actual football, but the guy seemed very sharp.

While this particular play didn't gain 20+ yards you can see how it works.

4 wide in a stack. First two block inside defenders. 3rd guy catches the ball. 4th guy goes to his right and they basically run an option based on the defender.

Go to just before the 35:00 mark.

At about the 40:00 mark he has his kicker do a drop kick onsides kick. Didn't work.

LWC played Belhaven University last year coached by Hal Mumme. Coach Mumme punted the first two possessions and only one more time the whole game. He went for it on 4th down 12 times, many of them in their own territory. They converted 4 of the 12 on fourth down. Belhaven lost 91-14.
