Can you see it? 10 more weekends from now, you grab the family (or your old high school buddy) and pull into your Alma mater campus, find the perfect parking spot talking about how the squad looked last year and how they WILL BE this year; I mean, this is the year for them to take it all the way and sock it to the team you despise. Yes, that team - The team whose fans are even ugly, whose colors never you would be caught wearing.

 

Can you hear it? You exit the car from your perfect spot, hearing the sounds of the bands as you enter the mecca of High school football (insert your stadium, bear with me I'm on a roll). You get to your seat watching your soon to be perfect team warming up. Short blows of the whistle from coaches, the awkwardly scream of, "Let's do this" from the 3rd string tight end that no one knows, the high, pitch voices of the 90 lb cheerleaders (they look 12 years old these days) and then, there it is the sound we've all been waiting for, the sound of the first tackle at kickoff. The snap, crackle, pop that replays in your head far too much; yes, that sound.

 

Can you smell it? You know the smell, the manly smell. The smell of the fog of grease that hovers over the 50 yard line; the smell from the QB club that just grilled enough burgers to feed your entire community. The only other smell you experience - the smell of Victory. As your squad scores yet another TD and you lean over to your buddy and say, "I can't wait till the playoffs to stick it to those Birds" (I mean that "other" team that we despise).

 

Can you touch it? No. Wrong decade. Sorry guys, our days are done. That's all I got.

 

Can you taste it? That overcooked burger that contributed to the fog that lasts till halftime. The cold hotdogs that you swore you would never buy again. The snack bag from your kid when your wife is not looking. The probable turnover, late in 4th quarter against the Birds. Crap, i mean that team that will cause you to revisit your sleep apnea center again this year.

 

Yes, all the senses can be experienced each and every weekend in a few short weeks. May each of your teams have a blessed, injury free season. Enjoy all the senses the Lord gave you during High School pigskin. May your team be victorious against that "other" team. See you soon. I'll be the ugly guy wearing the colors you don't own.

I've got to say though, when I think of football and "can you smell it", I think of the smell of fall, the crisp air, the smell of fallen leaves, and just a touch of a concession stand grill wafting across the sideline.

Great post PN. Other sounds are the murmur from the stands that grows louder and louder as the game gets closer, the shouts of kids greeting each other or playing around the perimeter and the bands tuning up their instruments.

Great post PN. I always compare football games to other sports, when I go to a basketball game it is great, same with other sports. But, when I go to a football game it is so much more then just a game, it's an event. There is so many components of a football game: the game, the band, the cheerleaders, the warm ups, the entering the field by the teams, the concession stand, the anthem, the coin toss, ect.

 

There is nothing like a football "event".

NO! Lol last season was one of the worst weather wise for the playoffs. Every playoff games I attended, the temp was in the 30's. Now if you can guarantee me 50's-60's during the late season and playoffs then YES.
