I think it's more a subtle way to let Ollie or Donovan know that he's willing to give the new coach a chance before making a decision.

Ollie hasn't been offered the job to remove himself from consideration. If OKC/Durant calls he will pick up the phone and listen. Ollie is the only coach that keeps KD in OKC. I have to believe the rhetoric that says that OKC consulted with KD before they fired Brooks. KD accepted it too easily.
