April 9, 201511 yr So I had piranhas in college. We fed them one night, and one of the goldfish escaped harm for two days. We decided he had earned his keep, so I put him in my community tank. He lived 4 years, and was over 6 inches long when he died. I had completely forgotten that I had the exact same thing happen. I didn't have piranhas, I had an Oscar. One goldfish managed to survive over a week after all his buddies were eaten. I decided to spare him and moved him to a a second tank I had. He didn't get quite as big or live as long (only about a year), as I didn't realize at the time goldfish were a cold water, not a tropical species and the tank he was in was far to warm.
