Who is going to be South Laurel's QB this year?

Featured Replies

With Ricky Bowling heading to Alabama with the staff from the last I heard, it opens up the QB spot for the Cards? Did Jantzen O'Neal wind up going to North Laurel as rumored or did he decide to stay at South? If not O'Neal, who is going to be the QB for South? Also, I've not had the chance to see O'Neal play. What kinda player is he?

I believe that Oneal will be SL's QB this season if Bowling goes to AL. Oneal has an excellent arm, but I don't believe he's as mobile as Bowling. IMO, SL will be fine with Oneal at QB.

If it indeed happens, pretty wild, imo, that a high school qb follows his coach 350 miles away to play high school football.

Jantzen is still a student athlete at South Laurel and is playing baseball for the Cards right now. In fact, I believe he had at least 1 RBI in the game vs North Laurel on Sunday afternoon. I seriously doubt he is moving to North. Boucher did a good summary on him. Smart kid, big kid, very strong arm, but not very mobile. Even if Bowling doesn't go to Alabama, with an entirely new coaching staff, there is no guaranteed that Bowling would win the job. I think he would be the favorite, but it really depends on what kind of offense the new staff decides to run.

I still am not 100% convinced that Ricky will be moving to Alabama. I know his family is considering a move, but don't know if it will actually happen. The other question is that IF Bowling does move, then O'Neil would have to be the frontrunner for the SL job (without a doubt), then who will be the QB at North this fall? It should be between Sr Tommy Lawson and Soph Justin Jones with Jones probably having the advantage as he did see some limited varsity action last season for the Jags.

Either way, this could be the 2nd straight season that both teams have a new starting QB running the show.

You know what I find funny? When I was in HS, I couldn't talk my parents into sending me to school less than 20 miles down the road so that I could play football, yet another parent would send their kid several hours away in pursuit of what they believe would be the right situation for their kid. It absolutely floors me the priorities I see on display in HS athletics.

Thanks! :thumb: I'd like to think so. My current physical appearance might make it hard to believe, but I was a pretty good athlete in my day, for my size. I did play on the best intramural hoops team at WKU during my day, and still like to get out on the tennis court when possible (and not nursing ankle injuries). :D

I don't disagree with what you are saying, but I am going to point out another situation.

There have been cases where a student/athlete's parents have moved to give that player his best shot at receiving an athletic scholarship. In some cases, the family could not afford college if their son does not receive a scholarship. What is a college scholarship to say, Vanderbilt worth. If the player is redshirted and stays five years, that scholarship is worth over $200,000. Economics.

Not a bad priority, huh?

Who are we to question what a parent does for their own child!

I know. I think my comment is borne out of frustration over opportunities I never had as much as anything.
