Driver charged in crash that killed grandpa, twins

 

The police investigation into a pedestrian crash that killed a grandfather and twin toddlers found the woman who hit them was distracted and "acted wantonly" while driving.

 

A Boone County grand jury indicted Jessica Hood, 22, of Erlanger, on three counts of manslaughter and two counts of assault in connection with the March 15 crash on Weaver Road in Florence.

 

The children were being pulled in wagons by grandfather Charles Napier, 52, and aunt Susan Elam as the family walked home after lunch at Gramma's Pizza when a Chevy Malibu driven by Hood crashed into them.

 

Napier and the twins, 13-month-old toddlers Samantha and Sean May, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Elam and a third grandchild Ethan May suffered minor injuries.

 

Florence police said three people were in the car with Hood at the time of the crash and took her cell phone to find out whether she was texting and driving. Police would not confirm if she was using her phone at the time of the crash because the case is ongoing.

 

Investigators determined that Hood was not paying attention when she left the roadway and fatally struck the family, according to Linda Tally Smith, Boone County Commonwealth's Attorney.

 

Witnesses rushed to offer aid after the crash. Pam Perez went to the scene when her 22-year-old daughter, Brittany Ballard, and 7-year-old son called after seeing the crash.

 

"They witnessed everything," Perez said at the time. "My daughter did CPR on the babies. My son saw the grandfather down in the ditch."

 

If convicted of all charges, Hood faces up to 12 years in prison.

I don't know how to feel about this. A tragedy anyway you look at it. Surely this girl should be held accountable. If that was my family I would be out for blood. On the other hand, it was a stupid mistake by an otherwise (by local accounts) good young girl. 20 years seems pretty steep. If she was my daughter, I would be pleading for mercy.
