I would just like to see another school in the 9th compete with NDA and their has been very few that have.

 

I would says there's been none. NDA website says they are 51-1 over the last 4 full seasons vs teams from Region 8,9, & 10 which is all of NKY.

 

I would not look for anyone to knock NDA off their pedestal this season. They have a great team and Morgan Hentz, who is the best all-around player in NKY. Once she's gone the rest of NKY will have a chance. Just be patient.

 

Let's be honest - Region 10 is much weaker compared to 9. Anyone expecting a return to dominance by NCC in 9 the way it used to be in 10 is going to be disappointed. Angie is a great coach and will do the best with what she has, but being in 9 means having to get past St. Henry, Ryle, Cooper, and NDA every year.

 

I'm pretty sure Coach Angie's plan isn't to wait to see who NDA graduates, because she knows as well as anyone - NDA doesn't rebuild, they reload. For example, I think about the great team NDA had in 2011 - went 32-6 and lost in the state semi-final. NDA had 5 seniors from that team continue to play in college. I'm sure a lot of people thought, well... that's it for them. All NDA has done since then is win Region 9 every year and finish as state runner up twice. Waiting for NDA to be "down" is not a great plan.

I think NCC had a good chance at getting kids to go there in the past because they were in the 10th and went to state every single year. Every player wants to go to state and with NCC being in the 9th, I think NDA is a more appealing option.

I don't think going to state is that big a factor in a kids decision on attending NDA over NCC. I think geography has much more to do with it. In every sport there are a few who chase the "State" experience when choosing a school, but for the most part I believe you receive your core kids through normal channels. Blessed Sacrament, St. Agnes, St. Pius have extremely strong volleyball programs and have so for years. That is why NDA is successful year in and year out. They have a core of kids coming from their feeder schools which guarantee they will always be good. The same could be said for St.Henry with IHM, MQH, St. Henry Elementary, and St. Paul. When Campbell Counties parishes put as much emphasis on volleyball as the Kenton/ Boone parishes do, NCC will present a serious challenge to NDA's dominance. From what I hear from my friends on that side of NKY, Basketball and Soccer are still the top sports kids participate in.

The emphasis on basketball might be changing in the future. I remember it being said somewhere in the state championship brackets that there are now more girls participating in volleyball than basketball. Hard to imagine but that's what was said.

Boys have football, girls have volleyball. Every other sport has a boys/girls team, or something very similar (softball/baseball). Volleyball is the only sport that is uniquely a girls' sport in KY, and frankly doesn't get overshadowed by the boys' team counterpart - cause there isn't one.

I don't disagree that girls volleyball is the best women's sport, bar none. I like it better then the men's game. But not all parents have transitioned as readily as we have. For instance, there are a lot of girls playing for Shining Stars and Kings up here in Campbell county, not to mention those in "Select" softball.

 

Today's top athletes are being courted or forced, (depending on how you look at it), into playing "Select" "AAU" or "Club"at a very early age in order to keep up with the Jones's. If mom and dad expose their little Janet to one of the top three traditional sports, (Softball, Basketball, and Soccer), chances are if they're a decent athlete they will get an invite to a Select or AAU team and then the kid is stuck in said sport because being a better than average athlete they will excel. Middle school girls of today play a given sport 10 months out of the year between Select/AAU/Club and school, maybe more. Add to that that sports seasons overlap, which makes it hard to try something new.
