Final.

Kunstek with 6 straight in the 3rd put the Cru up for good, not a bad night for the "big" man 16 & 10. :ylsuper:

Goetz goes for 17.

Snapp led the Wildcats with 20.

NCC played Newport in the finals last year. They beat St.Henry in the semis.

St.Henry played good, not great tonight. They will need a Herculean effort tomorrow to keep it close.

Kunstek with another double double. Goetz is just as good Snapp. He rebounds better.

St. Henry knocks off Wildcats

Crusaders savor chance to win Ninth Region ‘A’ tournament vs. NewCath

The St. Henry boys’ basketball team earned a long-awaited return to the Touchstone Energy Ninth Region All “A” Classic tournament final with a 64-57 win over Newport in Friday’s semifinal doubleheader nightcap at Holy Cross.

St. Henry (12-8) is in the championship game for the first time in seven years after rallying past the Wildcats (10-11), who led 24-23 at halftime.

The Crusaders face two-time defending small-school regional and state champion Newport Central Catholic in Saturday’s 7 p.m. final.

Helping them get there was junior point guard Adam Goetz, who scored a team-high 17 points, and senior forward Connor Kunstek who added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

“The first half, we didn’t do much,” Goetz said. “In the second half, we got it together and started making shots and playing better defense.”

The Crusaders took control with a 21-10 third-quarter scoring advantage, with six points in the quarter coming from Kunstek. Goetz scored five in the third as St. Henry closed the quarter with a 44-34 lead.

St. Henry took the lead for good at 32-31 on Alex Green’s basket with 4:10 remaining in the third. The score was part of a 14-3 Crusaders run that closed the quarter. The Crusaders stretched the lead to 12 in the opening minute of the fourth, but Newport whittled the lead to six at 48-42 on Paul Price’s steal and layin with 3:37 to play. It was as close as the Wildcats could get in the final quarter.

Price finished with 14 points. TheWildcats’ Ethan Snapp led all scorers with 20.

Newport outscored St. Henry, 23-20 during a frenetic fourth, but it wasn’t enough to earn the Wildcats their third consecutive All “A” Classic regional final. They had made the final in four of the previous six seasons, winning their lone regional crown in 2010.

“We’ve got to learn to come out and compete in the third quarter,” Newport coach Rod Snapp said. “In the third quarter, St. Henry executed. If we can do that in the third quarter, we’ll be a pretty good team.”

The Crusaders scored 41 secondhalf points, but their postgame celebration was business-like. They know that they’ll have their hands full against a NewCath team that won nine of its past 10 games.

“Just like everything else, we have a 24-hour rule. We forget about this game, and move on,” said St. Henry coach Dave Faust. “We have a tough challenge in front of us, and our kids know it. NCC is well balanced and well coached. But, that’s why we play the game. We’re going to have to go out there and handle their pressure.”

The Crusaders, back in the final for the first time since they won the All “A” Classic regional title in 2008, are seeking their seventh local smallschool crown. The final pits head coaches in Faust and Thoroughbreds coach Ron Dawn, who are former NewCath and Thomas More College basketball players.

“I was on Ron’s coaching staff at NCC for three years before I came to St. Henry,” Faust said. “We played together at Thomas More, so we know each other pretty well.”

St. Henry (12-8): Goetz 5 5 17, Kunstek 7 1 16, Lyons 2 4 8, Kenney 2 2 6, Williams 2 2 6, Wallenhorst 1 3 5, Green 1 2 4, Lanning 1 0 2.

Totals 21 19 64.

Newport (10-11): Snapp 8 2 20, Price 5 2 14, Davis 3 2 8, Covington 3 1 7, Hollis 2 0 5, Williams 1 0 3. Totals 22 7 57

Halftime: Newport, 24-23.

3-pointers: SH 3 (Goetz 2, Kunstek). N 6 (Price 2, Snapp 2, Williams, Covington).

Goetz is just as good Snapp. He rebounds better.

Agree! He was the best player on the floor last night. What year is Goetz?

Hollis for Newport was impressive. Kid is quick and plays with great effort.

Goetz does not score nearly as well as Snapp, and Goetz probably has more polished role players. He doesn't have to do everything. As evidenced by his lower D1 attention, and very solid d2 looks... I'll assume your opinions don't match their needs. Goetz is pretty good, as a junior, but his situation allows him to be a completely different player. Switch him and Snapp on teams, and Snapp does more, IMO.

Congrats to st. Henry on the W. Do they have a shot to beat NCC? Other than the... "Any given game" strategy.

Guess not based on the score I just saw. Ouch. St. Henry will come out strong in the next one.
