May 30, 200620 yr Not at all because private school supporters are against it. I have and had many family members who have gone to various private schools in the NKY and Greater Cincy area. Everyone always wants to turn this into BigZig hates the privates/parochials and that simply isn't true. I just believe that it is another one of those unfair advantages that private schools use to attract kids to their schools and in most cases it happens far more for athletics at least at some of the schools I observe. Just my opinion, not trying to offend anyone and for all I know I'm dead wrong but no one has ever really proven to me otherwise. They just blast away.. I was just asking because of the way you quoted the post and responded the way you did. But that leads to my next question...you think it's unfair that a private school provide financial aid for those desiring private education, but need help with the tuition? Wouldn't that leave the option open only to those who have a lot of money? As it is, no student can receive more than half-tuition in aid, so there's still a hefty sum to come up with to attend. Just wondering where the unfairness is in this issue.

Just wondering where the unfairness is in this issue. If I truly thought that no student could recieve no more then half-tuition in aid then I might be a little more open to the idea but I think that at least some institutions they find ways around that, especially if you can play a sport particularily well. At least up in these parts..I know you will disagree.

I would think, though, that all Kentucky private schools undergo the same constant scrutiny and feel comfortable that they are in compliance. I do ask this...is your statement about thinking some institutions based upon any proven facts, or suspicions you have, or just a general mistrust of private institutions?
May 30, 200620 yr What happens if we throw into this debate the fact that the tide is beginning to turn towards the govt giving stipends (or whatever name chosen?) to students in lower performing schools to go attend a better school. How's that gonna fly with some of the critics? After all, education is what MOST kids and parents are truely after ..at least last I heard it was Woody Jr

I won't sit here and suggest to you that I have proven facts but I do have very very strong suspicions and know some people who are fairly close to a couple situations that feel far more then 50% was and is being covered. Really no mistrust of the private schools at all though and I believe if that is where you wish to send your child then by all means you should. My son is Catholic and if he had really wanted to attend a parochial school I would have made every effort to get him there.

If your son had wanted to, but it was out of your reach without some aid, would you have accepted financial aid? If not, what lengths would you have gone to, to ensure he'd be able to attend a private school?

Wasn't faced with the dilemna so it is easy to take the stance I do now isn't it.. I guess my biggest problem is with those that go solely for athletic reasons only but there again that is their right. I just think maybe in these type of cases the privates ought not to be so willing to accept and give aid for athletic reasons. I know it is never worded that way and no private will ever admit to it but they do have coaches that go out and try to acquire good athletes. You can say that it doesn't happen all you want but the R word does happen alot and not just private schools.. (publics do it as well) But hey thats just my own soapbox. I know many don't agree

I know many don't agree I guess I don't understand how financial aid is relative to athletics, given that the aid form doesn't contain the name of the student, nor his/her activities. The application is sent to an outside, independent agency, approved by the KHSAA, and the award is decided by them. Scholarships are not awarded upon athletic ability, only academic, and those are limited as well. No student gets a full ride, so to speak. As for the R word, how will lessening the approved amount of aid help that situation, especially for those public schools that do it?

Sorry rockmom call me a cynic but i honestly just don't believe that. That may be the way it is supposed to be and might be in the Louisville area but sorry I do believe that exceptions are made for very good athletes.

Not to knock your beliefs, but I will have to agree with you being a cynic. Sometimes, I think people decide what they want to believe and don't want to be persuaded otherwise. Don't worry...I don't hold it against you....
May 30, 200620 yr No problem..I have just seen a number of very good athletes be able to find their way into private schools that have no financial means to attend a particular school but somehow the kid gets thru 4 years. Doesn't seem to work that way just for the smart kid or the kid in the band but let them run a ball or shoot a basket and it's very funny how things tend to work out for them..Just my opinion and I agree I can be a cynic..but I don't feel I'm to far off base on this one..

I guess the "financial means" issue is where I get a little agitated. With financial aid, and a family willing to give up some things, maybe work 2nd jobs, not take vacations, not have new cars....it is possible. I can tell you that with 100% certainty.
May 30, 200620 yr Well I can only speak for the Parochial school that my child attends but the school has nothing at all to do with the financial aid application. Our school provides a link to the outside corporation's website so that you can get an application but that is the extent of their invovlement. As rock mom stated no information regarding extra-curricular activity is ever collected.

Don't doubt that it is but in a few of the cases at least around here things are very very questionable to say the least. Kids without absolutely a dime and their parents below the poverty level and making no attempt to do the things you suggest but hey looky here. I'm attending a private school and it isn't because I'm a brilliant student but I can sure run a football or I can sure play basketball. If you can't admit that there is at least the possibly that these type of situations occur then with all due respect I think you are running with blinders on rockmom..

My mom didn't work, my dad worked at a job, where evenu at retirement age he wasn't making $25,000/year. I did work at the school after school, we never went on vacation, I'll never forget the lovely lime green Nova we drove, with the clutch that would get stuck, and we'd have to get out and raise the hood and pop it...The clothes from the thrift shops, never eating out...My parents did that so we could go to private schools. I did it for my kids. I didn't have to go to the lengths my mom and dad did, but we gave up a lot, and my kids took on a whole lot of responsibility early to make it happen.' I don't have blinders on. I know a lot more families just like mine that have/are/will be doing it.
