1. Johnson Central

2. Pikeville

3. Paintsville

While these three are traditionally tough, they may not be top 3 - especially Paintsville. They have to prove themselves to be deserving. I think Allen Central, Lawrence County, and Sheldon Clark can argue for a top spot as well. We'll be able to tell more as the season progresses however. Good luck to all!

With Pikeville, Paintsville, Allen Central, and Sheldon Clark in the All A this week, we may have a better feel after the tourney in some head to head with the exception of J Central

Could someone explain how a team qualifies for the all "A" tournament? I know that both Sheldon Clark and Shelby Valley are 2A in football, yet they are able to play in the all "A" tournament in basketball and baseball. It was just a few years ago that Sheldon Clark competed in 3A.

I believe for the All-A they just count enrollment for grades 10-12 which is how a lot of the AA schools are able to get in the tourney. The All-A is meaningless IMO in both baseball and basketball and if it isn't going to be a true All-A tournament I wish they would quit having it...however that won't happen. The only positive that I personally see in it is that it gives the schools that compete in it some tournament experience for when the postseason comes around.

Meaningless? It gives smaller schools a chance to play on a large scale, very competitive level...It is by no means meaningless!

OK maybe I shouldn't have said meaningless...Its nice to play at Applesbees and play some of the best small schools in the state. The best thing about the All-A is that it gives schools that advance in the All-A tourney more tournament experience which could really help if they advance far in the postseason. IMO that is the most meaninful aspect of the All-A tournament.

Pikeville seems to be playing as good as anyone, with JC, Sheldon Clark, and Allen Central cutting it close. At this point in the season anyway, and lets not forget the season is just beginning.
