Englemon played the entire game without coming out, I thought that was kind of strange but I guess the coach knows his team better then I do.

 

I noticed that too. But what an athlete! Sometimes it's hard to take a kid like that off the court. But she may have had a little more juice in the tank at the end if they had given her some breaks.

What if Holmes would of gave Englemon a break and put both Gulley and Mayes in when both of the twins were in for HC? Could that of been a difference in the game?

 

And Holmes offense in the first half against the zone wasn't there. Looked like they were trying to run a weave offense against it..

Good points. I thought Mayes played well when she was in. She looked like she played a little more calm than a couple others. She had a really big rebound and stick back and used the pump fake to get the HC girls off the floor. She just looked more composed during a few stretches.

 

Still don't know why the other Mayhaus saw such limited PT.

Never thought of that. This game was a learning experience for the Bulldogs. IMO I feel this game is a weight lifted of their shoulder. Being undefeated has a lot of pressure and now with a loss they can better themselves and fix the little things.

 

Should be interesting how they bounce back next week playing NCC and Highlands.

However, I think amount of attention Holmes coach dedicated to officials may have distracted him and/or his team. Game was called consistently bad or good, take it and go.

Agree here too. I also agree that they were consistent...meaning the same on both sides. But man they left me scratching my head at times! I thought Turner was going to set a record and foul out on 5 offensive fouls! Where I was sitting, the first one was a charge. The other three...:no:

Aside from the games at NKU last week, I would say this game had the largest crowd for any high school game this year, including boys games.

The game was a tale of two halves and Holmes just dug themselves too big of a hole. They had a couple of great looks to tie but they rolled out.

Credit Holy Cross for hanging in there.

I thought the "big game" feel had Holmes really tight early and Holy Cross's experience in the region and playing on the big stage helped them early and they were able to establish an early lead by burying some perimeter shots plus their zone forced Holmes into some rushed shots and careless turnovers.

Going forward I think Holmes had a lot of success with their 2-2-1 press in the second half and became more and more aggressive with it as Holy Cross started making longer passes. I would also think that they should look to pullup and shoot some 10 footers rather than going right into the teeth of the Holy Cross defense.

Holy Cross has 3 guards that can handle the ball plus a couple of big girls to help with pressure release.

A very entertaining game and I am still very surprised at the size of the crowd. I figured that there would be a lot of fans in attendance, but never thought it would be that full.

 

I agree with this analogy of the game. However I feel that Holmes' coaching is somewhat suspect. Player substitution was very questionable, on at least two occasions the coach took out the hot hand Harris. Holmes continued to drive the ball into the teeth of HC defense, by the second half the players should have been advised to take the short jumpers. The coach depended too much on Tubbs and Engleman. If they are having a bad game you can't be afraid to substitute for them. But most of all the team seemed overwhelmed by the hype of the game and did not get into their grove until the second half. The player's emotional preparedness falls squarely on the shoulders of the coach. Timely timeout does a lot to settle a team down.I hope that this is just a learning experience for all and Holmes will get better as a result of the loss.

Great atmospehere, two highly competative teams great to watch. Nice to see players from other school come out an support the game.

Any idea how many of those turnovers were in the last 3 1/2 minutes or so when McClendan went out? Just curious. They really struggled with her out of the game.

 

And an honest question for the HC people...when McClendan went out, I would think Turner would have been the next most logical to handle the ball, yet she hardly touched it in that timeframe. And it didnt feel like they were denying her the ball. She seemed to be hanging out in the corner or the wing and never brought it up the court.

26% shooting ? Had to be the worst performance shooting wise by the Bulldogs this season. Hard to win when your percentage is so low.

The turnovers were pretty consistent through out the game for HC w/wo McClendon the problem was Holmes didn't convert those to points and Holmes was not immune to turnovers themselves. Mayhaus changed alot of shots with her 5 blocks in the first half. The Indians did a good job of controlling the ball without McClendon but there was a noticeable lack of flow to the offense with her out.
