12th Region All A Preview

Recommended Posts

It’s the middle of January, fitness centers across the state are packed full of people trying to lose those extra Christmas pounds, and 12th Region basketball is in full swing. That also means it’s time for the Kentucky small schools to take center stage in the Touchstone Energy All A Classic.

The 12th Region All A will welcome a new team this year borrowed from the 5th Region. Washington County will join the traditional teams of Burgin, Danville, and Somerset at the Briar Patch in Somerset this week. These four teams will square off against each other starting Monday, January 19th to crown a 2015 champion which will represent the 12th Region in Frankfort. The Somerset Briar Jumpers are vying to win their 3rd straight class A region title while the Danville Admirals are wanting to get back to Frankfort, a place they haven’t been since 2012. Burgin nor Washington County has ever won a Class A regional title but both would love the opportunity to represent the 12th Region.

A breakdown of the teams:

Burgin Bulldogs (1-15)- Coach Brian Kirk knows he has a tall task in beating Danville, but to do so he will need a full team effort. The Bulldogs are averaging 36.8% from the field and 25% from three point range. They are lead in scoring by junior Tommy Lopresto who averages 13.5 points per game on 42.4% from the field and 27.6% from beyond the arch. He also pulls down 4.4 rebounds per game. Along with Lopresto, the Bulldogs rely on Senior John Price for offensive productivity. He averages 12.1 points per game on 39.5% from the field and 30.6% from three point range. The Bulldogs are led in rebounding by junior Michael Raiser 5.0 rebounds per game.

Danville Admirals (12-9)- The Admirals have played two of the four teams in the tournament earlier in the season and were victorious in each of those contests. They beat Somerset on December 6th 68-61 and they beat Washington County on December 28th 77-48. The Admirals are led in scoring by senior Cody Woolridge. He averages 15.9 points per game on 33.3% shooting from the field and 26.5% from behind the arch. He also pulls down 6.5 rebounds per game. Jaylen Henren adds 9.9 points per game while shooting 43.7% from the field and 41.5% from three point range. The Admirals are led in rebounding by Spencer McKinney who averages 8.1 rebounds per game.

Somerset Briar Jumpers (10-9)- The Briar Jumpers are the two time reigning 12th Region All A champions. To get back to Frankfort they will rely on senior Tyler Dishman and sophomore Landon Powell. Powell is leading the team in scoring averaging 20.5 points per game while shooting 52% from the field and 45% from three point range. Tyler Dishman is leading the team in rebounds with 6 per game and has 72 assists on the year. He is also scoring 15.0 points per game on 54% from the field and 36% from behind the arch. Senior Kenny Spear, freshman Trae Harmon and junior Daniel Coldiron are also needed to have big games if the Jumper want to return to Frankfort for a third straight time.

Washington County Commanders (1-14)- The Commanders will make their first appearance in the 12th Region All A tournament when they play Somerset Monday night. They would love to pull the upset over the heavily favored Briar Jumpers, but to do so they will need offensive productivity from a very balanced scoring team. No one on the team averages double digits but they are led in scoring by senior Justin Shelton. He averages 9.1 point per game while shooting 38.3% from the field and 29.8% from behind the arch. Zac Graves is adding 8.7 points per game on 38.6% from the field and DT Yokum is scoring 8.1 points per game on 41.4% from the field. The Commanders are led in rebounding by Kambron Hayden with 5.7 rebounds per game.

The 12th Region will face the 13th Region at 9:30 Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Frankfort Convention Center. Good luck to the teams of the 12th region.

Monticello is no longer open and without Monticello there are only three teams eligible from the 12th. Not sure why they don't use KSD though.

KSD chooses not to play in the event. They play in the Mason-Dixon Conference tournament (basically deaf schools from SEC states) this weekend, which is the biggest event of their season. It always clashes with the All-A.
