How can you put him in?

 

Well, it's not like he doesn't have a proven track record. He did drag Stanford into the top 5, after all. Bill Walsh couldn't even do that. You may think he's a horse's behind as a person, but Jim Harbaugh is one of the best coaches in the business, regardless of the level.

I don't like nor dislike him. I believe he coached 7? years in college and maybe 3-4? at Stanford. No NC's. Just not enough there for me to put him on the list of best college coaches yet. I agree he's very good. The conversation started with Saban and Meyer and then went towards others who could be in the discussion. IMO no way he gets put in there yet.

I've thought a lot about this question since it was posed.

 

Consider the following.....

 

- If we are talking a one game scenario, or a scenario with time prepare, Urban is your guy. Saban has actually underwhelmed in some layover moments. Loss to Utah, Bama played terrible in the Texas BCS title game and should be thankful McCoy got hurt, this season against tOSU, etc. Urban has been a beast in these type games.

 

- I think from an overall program building and sustainable product, Saban gets the nod. I know Big 10 guy will not agree with me, but it is a much easier road to success in the Big 10. In Urban's tenure at Florida he never went undefeated and only one time went through an SEC schedule unscathed, and in that same season he lost in the SEC title game. So you can say he never went unscathed. At tOSU he has done it in three times in an as many years. The degree of difficulty is less in Columbus. Sorry, but it is. I am not taking anything away from what he has done. Saban has built a machine in Alabama in what is the toughest conference. Meyer had no backup plan for when Tebow left and you could see the product was going to slip. You do not see that with Alabama.

 

With all of that in mind, I like the situation Meyer has in Columbus. Barring something catastrophic, the most they will ever lose in the Big 10 will be one game, so the season is still salvageable. I usually defer to the coach who in a one game for my life scenario who I want on my sidelines, and that would be Meyer.
