I think it will be interesting to see how this team responds to playing each game as the defending AA champs. They may start with a swagger, but they have to remember that they will get everyone's "A" game. Ivan and staff will do what's necessary to keep the mental aspect in the right place. I look for the team to meet the challenge. Should make for a bunch of entertaining Friday nights.

They will have a bullseye on their backs, but I'd venture a guess that Russell already gets everyone's A game on their schedule.

I think the biggest difference in being the defending champs may be internal. Sometimes the pressure is greater from your own expectations, and that of the community, than any added pressure from opponents taking you more seriously. Especially in this case, since Russell wasn't exactly a Cinderella.

I'm sure they will not disappoint and we will see them right in the thick of things come late November.

I guess I was referring more to the non-district part of the schedule. The local teams have to be sick of hearing about the rings, etc. I know I would be. I think these teams will have a little extra incentive to try and knock the Devils off. However, there could be a reverse revenge factor when Russell suits up for the BC Lions this year. They whipped out butts good last year.

Russell will make a lot of noise this year. They are a favorite to repeat as 2A champs, and to beat our local area 3A schools too – if their rings don’t weigh them down too much. :D

It should be a fun year for the Red Devils.

The Red Devils will come back just as strong as last year. They have a good chance to repeat but I,m sure Belfry, New Port, and some of the other powerhouse teams will have something to say about that. I said it before, the loss to Boyd County was the best eye opener for the Devils. It showed them that they can be beat on any Friday night. That X on thier back! I don't think will mean that much. Ivan will have his team ready each and every friday night. I'm a firm believer that losing a game early in the season makes you a better team. It makes you play harder because you realize you can be beat.

Go Red Devils in 2006.

Jeepman,

That being said, do you think these Devils want a piece of Boyd County?

I think its very fair to say Russell has a great shot at a perfect season & thats probably whats motivating coach McGlone & his staff [perhaps some could comment WITHOUT the usual "we ALWAYS try for a perfect season stuff;) ]

We will get a look at Belfry when they play Ashland early on and there hasn't been much crowing from No. KY 2A, so Russell should be a virtual lock to get back to the pizza box this year.

However many good teams there are in the west (If ANY are as good as Russell) only one (1) can survive to face Russell in the end.

The toughest competition till then is probably their 3 neighbors: Greenup Co, Boyd Co & Ashland.

As a Tomcat fan I think that will be their toughest game due to:

- the closeness of & ending of last years game

- a "comparison factor" issue b/c Ashland & Belfry will have just played each other (I THINK both games are both close to each other)

- and with each successive season in HS ball, coach Hart is only going to become a even greater HS football coach :thumb: (NO knock on any others)

So Russell should be ranked #1 or 2 all season.

just remember ...... "heavy wears the crown"

Let us reach back not 3 full years for Russell inspiration for

the second of the big three. Many of the starting Devils

next season will be bitter with the taste of a close Kiwanis

Bowl loss in 2003.

As always it's hard to repeat, but the Devils have just as

good a chance this coming season as anybody. Talk of a

perfect season is nice, but I have to agree with Jeepman

that a loss to Boyd County really made the Devils hungry

for wins the rest of the season. It may or may not be Boyd

County this year (remember the Boyd County coaching

staff just changed along with the loss of many starters if

I'm not mistaken) but Russell will face at least one, probably

more, regular season nail biter or loss. Hopefully however,

Russell will continue to use the Boyd County loss, along

with motivation of a perfect season and a second consecutive

title, for another run.

P.S. - Woody, those new jersies are terrible. Scarlet

and... umm...
