Sayre 79 Bishop Brossart 72 in OT

Sayre is now 7-2 - putting together a pretty nice season.

Heard Brossart had a sizable lead and Sayre made a nice comeback. Can't wait to hear Mustangs take on the game.

In horse-racing parlance - we "faltered."

 

As opposed to previous games where we "dwelt."

 

We are a young team without a defined go-to guy who can get us a clutch basket. Led 55-42 coming out of the third quarter rolling merrily along. A series of Mustangs turnovers and Sayre shot connections led to a 13-2 Sayre run. Sayre sophomore Jake Durby took over the game, scoring 13 points in the pivotal fouth quarter, while scoring 33 on the night, hitting 17 of 18 from the line.

 

Brossart's Jackson Crawford, strapped with foul trouble early, did his best to keep us in the game, netting 11 points in the final period and overtime, to finish with 25 points on the night. Jon Zink added 15 but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter and OT, Ditto Jake Zai who scored 14 on the night. We were again (reference HolyCross game) outshot 23/35 to 11-17 from the free-throw line. That is no inference to the officiating, which was stellar. We just have got to imporve our defensive practices.

 

Bright spots are that again we played several good quarters and were dominant enough to lead by 17 in the third quarter. Bad news is that we failed to sustain our drive and allowed what appeared to be a W slip away. Jake Zai had a shot to win it at the buzzer that rimmed out.

 

Credit Sayre's intense 32 minute defensive effort and for stepping up when seemingly defeated and pulling out the win. We will bait them up again tomorrow at 5:30pm against either Atherton or Henry County and try again. Work-in-progress!

Brossart will play host Henry County in a consolation round game at 5:30pm.

The sophomore who scored 33 last night for Sayre is Jake Duby, not Durby, as I have stated in above post.
