Ohmer sparks Eagles to 3-0 start

 

It was a fantastic start to the season for the Scott Eagles. After a smooth and easy Tuesday night win vs. Calvary Christian, the Eagles downed visiting Pendleton County 85-67 on Wednesday. Leading by 1 at halftime, Scott outscored the Wildcats 23-2 in the 3^rd quarter en route to the victory. Sophomore guard Jake Ohmer led the Eagles with 32, while senior guard Blake Schneider fired in 22 points. Finally, the Eagles wrapped up the week with a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over Dunbar on Saturday. Ohmer again led Brad Carr's team, pouring in a school record 42 points, as the Eagles won 75-72.

 

Campbell, GRC both go 2-0

The two teams we ranked #1 and #2 in the pre-season both started off on the right foot. Scott Humphrey's George Rogers Clark squad overwhelmed host Nicholas County on Tuesday night. The Cards held the Jackets to just 4 1st quarter points and 1 4th quarter point, coming away with a convincing 69-24 win. On Saturday, the Cardinals entertained Pendleton County, winning 67-46 behind 18 points from Damion King and 16 from Braxton Greene. Meanwhile, Aric Russell's top-ranked Camels had a 21-point 4th quarter lead over Dixie Heights on Friday night, and held off a late Colonels rally to win 58-51. Less than 24 hours later, Campbell took to the road and upended Chillicothe (OH) by a score of 55-45, with junior big man Matt Wilson taking game MVP honors.

Royals, Panthers have perfect week

 

Dorian Henry powered Mason County its only game last week. The 6'6" senior forward scored 27 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the Royals 67-58 win over visiting Simon Kenton on Friday. Henry shot 12-16 from the floor and 3-4 from the charity stripe. Mason's 39th District rival Augusta took to the hardwood four times last week, coming away victorious in each contest. The Panthers opened the season with a Tuesday night 67-46 road victory over Robertson County, behind 19 points from Camryn Snapp and 15 points from Connor Maddox. A night later, Jason Hinson's team cruised past Silver Grove 79-53, with Maddox scoring 19 and senior guard Nathan Shrader adding 15. The weekend saw the Panthers leave Maysville with a 67-65 nail-biter over 39th District foe St. Patrick before dispatching Lloyd on Saturday, 67-61 in the Panthers Den. Maddox poured in a career-high 27 points and Snapp contributed 24 points and 6 boards.

 

Montgomery, Paris, and Brossart each split

 

Montgomery County and first-year head coach Matt Daniel won their season opener, 84-63 at Bracken County on Tuesday. The Indians drained 11 3-pointers in the game, with Art Walker's 21 points leading the way. 6'7" big man Shelby Combs added 20 points and 6 rebounds, while senior Sam Hodgson chipped in 19. The Indians were less fortunate on Saturday, falling 54-52 at home to West Jessamine in the Bart Rison Classic. Walker led the Indians again with 20 points.

 

Koebe Garrard and Paris played the same West Jessamine team on the road Tuesday night, with the Greyhounds falling 85-81 despite getting 24 points and 6 rebounds from Garrard. The Hounds coasted to their first win of the season on Saturday, whipping Riverside Christian 94-22, with Garrard going for 22 and 6. Sophomore swingman Jekobi Wells added 17 points and 6 rebounds of his own.

 

Mike Code's Bishop Brossart Mustangs opened the season against 9th Region foe St. Henry on Tuesday, falling behind by as many as 23 points, before pulling close but losing 61-53. Two nights later, the Stangs won an 80-77 double overtime thriller over Ethan Snapp and Newport in Alexandria. Jackson Crawford, a 6'3" junior, led Brossart with 27 points and senior Spencer Hackworth tossed in 16.

 

Thompson a force for Thorobreds

Forward Trenton Thompson led Harrison County to a 2-1 record last week. Thompson scored 33 points and pulled down 7 rebounds in the Breds season-opening 64-48 home win over St. Patrick. The 6'5" senior then scored 17 in Harrison's 71-54 victory over 38th District rival Nicholas County in Cynthiana on Friday. On Saturday, Thompson exploded for 36 points and 6 rebounds, but Larry Kendall's crew lost 73-61 to Simon Kenton.

Crawford eclipses 1,000 points

 

Bracken County guard Austin Crawford, a 6'3" sophomore, became the school's 25th 1,000 points scorer in a lopsided Friday night loss at Knott County Central, the state's 3rd ranked team. The Polar Bears found themselves on the receiving end of a 44-1 Patriots run, before falling 80-38. Crawford scored all but 11 of the team's points, and in doing so, surpassed the 1,000 points plateau.

Senior guard Landon Sexton scored 24 points, hitting 4 3-pointers, to give Bourbon County a 64-59 win over Estill County on Saturday. The win is the first for Bob Eades as head coach of the Colonels.

 

Silver Grove lost both of its games last week, but in Wednesday's road loss to Augusta, 5'9" senior guard Anthony Turcios scored 31 points on 13-22 FG shooting, 2-4 3pt. FG's, and 3-7 FT's.

 

St. Patrick played 4 times last week, finishing 2-2. Senior big man Andrew Sticklen played in 3 of those games and averaged 26.3 ppg and 13 rpg.

 

New Pendleton County coach Keaton Belcher's young Wildcats squad lost all 3 of its games last week, albeit against a formidable schedule. The Cats fell to Scott, Scott County, and George Rogers Clark. Sophomore guard Michael Antrobus leads the Wildcats in scoring at 14 ppg, while 8th grader Dontaie Allen is second on the team at 9 ppg.

 

Nicholas County joins Pendleton County, Bracken County, and Silver Grove as the quartet of 10th Region teams without a victory. The Jackets will have 3 tries at home in Week #2 to change that.

 

Robertson County senior guard Dawson Cooper scored 22 and 20 in a pair of losses to Augusta and Villa Madonna. The Black Devils put a notch in the win column on Friday with a 66-46 win over Dayton.

 

After an opening season loss to Scott, Calvary Christian evened its record to 1-1 with a 55-16 triumph over Christian Fellowship on Saturday.
