I'm hearing that Mason County will be starting volleyball this year; maybe not at the varsity level, but with an eye towards varsity status in '07.

 

Virtually every other nearby school has had volleyball for several years now - St. Patrick, Bracken County, Augusta, Deming, Fleming County, etc.

 

Anyone else have better information than me?

With the size of school Mason is, I wonder why they are now just starting a team?

Mason County has always had very good athletes. This is a great step in the right direction. I would love to see more schools do the same.

I would chalk it up to territorialism; all the other girls' coaches worrying they might lose someone to another sport or that someone will get hurt playing another sport.

 

I would think, however, in a school where basketball is king (but football is on the way up), that volleyball would be ideal preparation in many ways for basketball - except for the obvious fact that there would be a period of time - volleyball season - when basketball players weren't 100% focused on basketball.

Mason may have a big gym and a nice basketball tradition, but it's not as big as a lot of folks think. Enrollment is 809 - compared to 1451 for Clark County, 1057 for Montgomery County, 922 for Harrison County, 837 for Bourbon County.

 

That being said, there's no reason for Mason County not to have started a volleyball program long before now; especially in light of the fact that St. Patrick (91), Deming (117), etc. have established programs.

Most should have already been required to have volleyball. It all depends on the total number of guy sports. Title IX issue.

I already checked and they have 8 and 8...adding VB would give the girls 1 up....you dont see that very often.

Could wrestling be in their future? I wonder how long, if ever, before Kentucky has boys volleyball? Ohio has had it for several years now. I think they play it in the spring, kinda like the NCAA does mens.

Most girls players at the next level were multi sport athletes. The majority playing Basketball and volleyball. You would think parents would see that. We have found that playing other things keeps kids more focused and there is less burnout. As for fear of injury, injuries will happen you can't live or play in fear.

You'll get no argument from me; I don't think that the resistance has come from the parents.

 

Regarding multi-sport participation, it seems to be encouraged on the boys' side (Lofton was 1st team all-state as a wide receiver his senior year as wellas Mr. Basketball, most of Mason County's current basketball starters also play football).

 

I just can't understand the historical reluctance to start volleyball at MCHS. And I doubt that you'll see a wrestling team here.

Mason already has as many boys' sports as girls. Boys sports are football, soccer, golf, cross country, basketball, baseball, indoor track, outdoor track. I may be missing one, or indoor/outdoor track may not count as two separate sports; I'm not sure. No wrestling, no lacrosse, no field hockey for girls (these sports were BIG in Maryland when I went to school).

If girls do not have football? What sport are they playing that boys are not. If the sports are 8 and 8, I was wondering what they have that boys do not?

Girls play soccer, golf, cross-country, basketball, softball, tennis, indoor track and outdoor track. Not sure if cheerleading counts as a varsity sport; if so, it would offset football.
