With all due respect to PBR, the best catcher in the 9th region isn't listed on the top 200? There's a kid named Blake Roederscheimer (sp??) that catches for Boone County who is one of the best that I've seen in a long time.

If he hasn't gone to a PBR event, he won't be on the list. Also, PBR rankings are based on raw camp data such as 60 yd dash times, exit velocities, top fastball speed, pop times, etc. Their rankings have almost nothing to do with a kid's baseball IQ and competitiveness. PBR does great work, but that is one flaw.

PBR is there to provide a glimpse into the potential of a kid for college coaches. They will rate a kid without camp attendance of they see them play, there are several kids that are committed wilthout showcase data. Unfortunately, baseball IQ and competitiveness is not what coaches look for if not accompanied by the physical size and skills, just like the ability to throw strikes for a pitcher, they look for raw velocity. Coaches feel they can teach and pull the rest out of kids.

I have to agree with MalibuRunner, PBR is a great tool for college coaches. Also, It is a good tool for players to see where they stack up against other kids in the state. If you go to one of these events and show out, it gets you some good exposure. On the down side, If you attend and don't have a strong arm or bat or not too quick at the 60 yard , that info also will be seen by college coaches. Players with less talent can make up some ground with baseball IQ and competitiveness with things like reading a pitcher and getting a good jump on a steal but it will not help with velocity or bat exit speed.

Right.....I've always had great baseball instincts ...but my fastball topped out at 62 mph. :idunno:

All true... And I personally love what PBR does... But velocity and bat exit speed does not make one a great player... It surely doesn't hurt, but it isn't the whole story. And PBR doesn't claim to give the whole story...just what they believe bases on what they've seen. That was my main point in answering lauch8... More than likely PBR has not yet seen or heard of the catcher from Boone... Or if the kid is as good as was said, he'd probably be on the list. Unless, as I said... If his "measurables" are below what they believe to be top 200. It doesn't necessarily mean the kid isn't going to be a college level player...maybe he just needs exposure or needs to promote his "intangibles" if the "measurables" are lacking. That's where he would need high school coaches and/or summer coaches to speak on his behalf.

I usually agree with 90% of everything you say... Except with this. Obviously, if a kid throws 90 versus a kid throwing 70...no brainer. But comparing HS kids that throw 78mph versus 82mph... Or runs a 7.3 60 yd dash compared to a 7... Believe me, they care and compare baseball IQ, instincts, etc. and more importantly... Grades! I wish more kids understood the school part of it. I've known and still know several college coaches (both family members and family friends) that have all passed on kids with higher measurables based on things that I've just mentioned.

As one coach told me...if you just look at numbers, your just lazy.

Yes, they use PBR and Perfect Game and Baseball Factory and NCSA and FieldLevel, etc.

But if they're really interested in a kid.. They want to talk to the kid, his coaches, parents, teammates, teachers, etc.

A smart college coach will get the full story on a kid...as much as reasonably possible anyway.

FootMaster you are correct that players need the grades, but coaches will start their day looking at the kids with the more obvious baseball talent. The coaches will start their info hunt on these kids. If the player doesn't have the grades, the hunt will trickle down to the kids with less talent but has the grades. The coach doesn't want to be sitting in the dugout after the first semester with only a half a team because of players not making the grades. Players / Parent's feelings should not be hurt because they attended a PBR event and are not in the top 200. If they really have the baseball IQ and competitiveness , They will see will they lack and work hard to get what they want. A less talented kid who really works hard everyday will eventually shine. The talk about PBR is just baseball numbers, it has nothing to do with the IQ, competitiveness, grades. That is all hidden treasures that coaches will find. PBR and other events is just a good starting point for the players to get exposure to colleges.
