This may be the best game I have seen all year. A lot of drama and back and forth action with the game not settled till the final horn sounded. These two teams entered the game with one loss each and the game did not disappoint.

 

Beechwood opened with a good drive but was stopped on downs at the CCH 36. Covington Catholic responded with their own strong drive. They were able take their drive into the end zone. Malachi Pike was on the receiving end of a 26 yard pass play from QB AJ Mayer. The extra point was no good, Colonels lead 6-0 with 2:15 left in the first quarter. Beechwood went 3 and out then had a short punt to give the ball to the Colonels only 40 yards from the end zone as the first quarter ended.

 

It didn't take CCH long to put the ball in the end zone on a Jack Defraites 1 yard TD run, 2 point try no good making it 12-0 with 9z:03 left in the half. Beechwood fought back on a long, grinding drive that ate up almost 7 minutes. Logan Castleman scored on a 4 yard run, Daniel Mescher converted the XP and the Tigers were back in it trailing 12-7 with 2:25 left in the half. The Tigers forced a 3 and out by CCH and had the ball back with a chance to perhaps take the lead. However, a fumble gave the ball to the Colonels at the Beechwood 31. Covington Catholic took advantage scoring on a nice 10 yard fade pass by Mayer to Paul Thelen with 30 seconds left in the half. Grant Dyer added the XP to make the halftime score 19-7.

 

The Tigers got fired up at halftime and stopped the Colonels on a 3 and out to open the second half. Beechwood picked up a first down and then went for it on 4th down at the CCH 45. A sack got the Colonels the ball at the Beechwood 48. The Colonels picked up one first down but then they were stopped on downs at the Beechwood 29 on a sack by the Tigers. Beechwood again found the going tough but picked up first downs. They again went for it on 4th and were stopped by CCH at the 41.

 

Cov Cath looked like they were going to make good use of the short field. Then Beechwood's Jake Massie intercepted a pass at the one and ran the ball all the way out to the 44. Beechwood was not going to be denied this time. They moved the ball down field 3 yards at a time. Eddie Erdman finally punched the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out with 4:32 to go. Mescher's XP made it 19-14 and the Tigers had a chance. Beechwood's Jake Moore made a great interception on a bullet of a pass thrown by Mayer on a slant pattern. That gave Beechwood's offense the ball at the 41 with plenty of time left and victory in sight. The Tigers moved the ball inside the 5 and had it first goal. Then disaster struck as the Tigers fumbled the ball. Still the Tigers had time outs and a chance to get the ball back. They had the Colonels 3rd and 8 when Mayer ran the read option himself and powered forward for the first down with about 45 seconds to go in the game. The Tigers were out of time outs and that ended their chance for victory.

 

Final score Covington Catholic 19 Beechwood 14.

 

Other standout players for the Colonels were LB Jack Maile and Sammy Harmon on defense. For Beechwood other players who should be mentioned are Harrison Heist who made some big defensive plays. John Odom had a number of nice catches and QB Braydon Burch looked good throwing the ball. Great ball game on both sides.

I know that has to be at least the third or fourth goal line stand in the six games Cov Cath has played to either win or seal the game. Very resilient bunch on D.

 

Young Colonels now 5-1 heading into what looks like an interesting game vs Conner next week. Only loss was a 6-0 setback vs SK on a reverse flea flicker in the closing minutes.

Not to sidetrack the thread, but how are they doing the freshman title game? Is it still just one big freshman league for all N. Ky. and the top two play for the title at the end? Who is in the running for the title game?

I don't have a clue. I know Scott's freshman are 5-1, losing only to SK, while having beat NCC, Beechwood, Lloyd, Holy Cross, and Holmes.

Wondering if a Championship game would even happen since the last scheduled Frosh games are the same week as the last regular season Varsity games and I thought the rule was that the Frosh games could not go past the Varsity regular season.

My guess is Simon Kenton, who I think is undefeated, and perhaps Covington Catholic who only has one loss. Has Ryle's freshman team lost yet?

Beechwood freshmen have lost to Cov Cath and Scott. Their wins are over Holy Cross, Newport, Lloyd and Holmes. Two games left - New Cath and Holy Cross again. That sounds like a small school freshman division schedule except for Cov Cath.
